Condition: Near fine

San Francisco: Printed for Private Distribution by H.S. Crocker Company, Incorporated, 1920. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Garnett, Porter. Octavo size, [22] pp., holiday presentation card from H.S. Crocker Company slipped in. A small collection of poems by American writer and conservationist Hildegarde Flanner (1899-1987). This work was written while she was a student at the University of California, Berkeley, and is her first book. In his introduction, Porter Garnett (1871-1951) claims the work as essentially Californian due to the author's locale at the time it was written. He exalts the author for her "cadences, never severely patterned... unfailing grace," and "sensitive word play." Garnett was an active member in the Bay Area literary renaissance, and would have been the assistant curator at the Bancroft Library while Flanner was a student, likely resulting in this glittering collaboration. ___DESCRIPTION: Original quarter parchment and pale marbled paper boards, title and author printed on white paper on upper board and back, endpapers with decorative flourish patter in gilt, title-page in black and red within ornate black and gilt floriated border, likewise for the frontis, each page printed in black with red initials within ornate black and gilt floriated borders, publisher's device at colophon in black and red; laid paper, octavo size (9" by 6 7/8"), pagination: [i-v] vi-x 1-11 [1 colophon] pp., first edition, holiday presentation card from H.S.
