About This Item

(Vancouver, BC): Heavenly Monkey, 2007. Taylor, Andrea. Octavo. (8)ff. From an edition of fifty, all signed by the author, this is copy number one of ten containing a frontispiece linocut portrait of the author by Andrea Taylor, signed and numbered by the artist, as well as a photo etching of Reid from a snapshot taken while he was en route to San Francisco. Reid was proprietor of Vancouver's Graphos Press until the early 1960s, when he went to work as the designer for McGill University Press in Montreal, where he oversaw production of what is considered to be his greatest work, The Lande Bibliography of Canadiana. Following this, Reid moved to New England and worked as a book packager, producing editions for major publishing houses. In A Young Printer in San Francisco Reid tells a brief version of his 1949 excursion to San Francisco to meet William Everson and Robert Grabhorn, whose work he had admired. The book is letterpress printed in red and black on dampened HM Text paper. The inclusion of the Graphos printer's device under a short biographical sketch of Reid subsequent to the main text is a nice touch. Extremely fine in a patterned paper and limp vellum binding, with the title on the spine.
