About This Item
New York: Kiggins & Kellogg, 1850. Wraps. Very good overall. A cautionary tale of the young son of "an humble farmer" who insists on going to sea, despite his parents admonitions, and of the frightening adventures he undergoes. The voyage takes Tom from China to New South Wales, to Banguay Island (north of Borneo) and Suba Island before reaching "Rio" and beginning the journey home. Tom now admonishes his young friends "not to seek for ease and happiness on the uncertain ocean". Not in Muir. 16mo, 2 7/8 inches by 4 1/2 inches, 16pp, 6 b&w illus. Blue paper wrappers with illustration of the young sailor on deck within a circular frame and title in black on front cover. Back cover ads for Kiggins & Kellogg, Publishers, Booksellers and Stationers, 123 & 125 William Street. Wrappers dusty, split at spine, but attached.
