About This Item

1959. Near Fine. A collection of scrapbook photo albums and associated ephemera assembled by a young woman to document her Girl Scouting activities in Maryland from 1959-64, and her overlapping high school years from 1963-66. The archive consists of four scrapbook photo albums, over 60 loose black and white snapshots, and 25 holograph letters relating to her activities at two Girl Scout Camps, her troop's "Trailer Trip," and associated "outside activities."

Also included are three associated albums assembled during her sophomore, junior, and senior years at two Maryland high schools from 1963-66, together with miscellaneous personal papers and photographs of her from her birth in 1948 through the mid-1960s, as well as family papers and photographs of her parents (circa 1910-60).

A great niece of Andrew Carnegie, she was an avid and especially active member of Girl Scout Troop 1087 based at Camps Whippoorwill and Shadowbrook in Maryland. Among the scouting albums and loose photographs are black and white snapshots and associated ephemera and memorabilia that document various outdoor activities at both camps, including Youth Group Picnics dating from 1961-63, and a 1963 Trailer Trip to wilderness parks throughout Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Upstate New York. The albums also contain images of her various Girl Scout friends gathered at private social events from 1963-64, including trailer trip reunion parties and a "Beatlemania" slumber party.

Likewise, the three high school albums consist of black and white and color snapshots and much associated ephemera that document both her activities at high school and associated social activities, several of which include her girl scout friends.

An illuminating and comprehensive portrait of a young woman's formative years during the early 1960s. A detailed list of the collection is available.
