West was a prominent English orientalist and translator of Zoroastrian texts, who prepared the Pahlavi texts ('Marvels of Zoroastrianism') for Prof. Muller's 'Sacred Books of the East' series. Muller's monumental work is the English translation of essential sacred texts of Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Zoroastrianism, Jainism, and Islam.
The Vendidad is an important cultural and ethical moral guide for Zoroastrians, a collection of texts including prayers, myths and religious observances. In part, it describes various sources of evil, and ways to defend against them.
With tipped in albumen portrait of E. W. West, with printed signature, and dated June 6th, 1895. Pencil notations in the text pertaining to translation of a term for 'deceased' (xlviii); pen hand written notation in Persian on verso of xlix.
Tall 4to, [14]pp, xlix, 229pp. Spine chipped; internally, first signatures detached but present, otherwise, a good copy, the text bright and clean. OCLC: 257853627.
