About This Item

Krakow: Naklad Towarzystwa Wydawnictw Ludowych, 1906. Octavo (21.5 × 14.5 cm). Original pictorial wrappers by Henryk Uziembło; 160 pp. Light overall wear to wrappers; spine sun-tanned; discrete owner signature to title; overall very good. First edition thus. Polish translation of the famous Erfurt Program of 1891 of the SPD (Socialist Democratic Party of Germany), with the commentary and notes of Karl Kautsky, one of the three authors of the original program (along with August Bebel and Edward Bernstein). The "Program" deviated from classical Marxism in prescribing a legal move toward socialism through electoral politics rather than calling for a revolution, and was criticized by Engels for this "revisionism". The Polish translation of the program with Edward Bernstein's (1850-1932) commentary appeared in Lviv (then Russian Empire) in 1901. Bernstein's commentary along with his 1896 "Problems of Socialism" went even further in claiming that the fall of capitalism was not in fact imminent, calling for an even more gradual transition for capitalist to socialist economy. These assertions led Karl Kautsky (1854-1938) to break with Bernstein, and publish his own commentary and notes. The Polish translation of Kautsky's annotated version of the Erfurt Program appeared in 1902 in London. This second edition was the first and only to feature the attractive wrappers by Henryk Uziembło (1879-1949), a Polish painter and graphic artist. The book is typical of the heated disputes within the SPD and between socialists and communists more broadly.

As of February 2021, KVK, OCLC show two copies of this edition in North America.
