Cambridge, Mass: John Wilson and Son, 1887. Hardcover. Very Good. v, [1], 236 p.; 28 cm. Original brown-red morocco-grain cloth with gilt spine title; blind-stamped decoration on front cover. English, German, Onondaga, and Delaware in parallel columns. Preface signed: Eben Norton Horsford. Inscribed on front free endpaper in one hand "J.G. Lord Wellesley College" and in another "to Hancock Point Library June 4, 1920." In the Preface, Horsford states: "My aim has been to preserve the Dictionary of the venerated Moravian missionary precisely as he left it, with its somewhat eccentric English and somewhat antiquated German." He thanks Bertha Hortense Merrill of Cambridge for her assistance. She was an assistant at the Boston Athenaeum in 1885. David Zeisberger (1721-1808) was the Moravian missionary responsible for the compilation of this important dictionary of two Native American languages. In Very Good Condition: cover is rubbed; light foxing, primarily on first and last leaves; otherwise, clean and tight.
