About This Item
Amsterdam: Willem van Vliet, 1806. 8vo. 28, [4] pp. With 32 hand-coloured etchings on 26 plates. Contemporary marbled limp boards. Owner's entry on paste-down and on leaf A2, the occasional foxspot, few very light marginal stains, spine chipped, upper joint damaged near the foot, leaf B4 damaged near the gutter margin, otherwise in very good condition.
A coloured copy, complete with 32 charming etched illustrations on 28 plates by Pieter de Mare after drawings by Christina Chalon (1749-1808), all in fine publisher's hand-colouring.
Chalon was an apprentice of Sara Troost (daughter of the well-known artist Cornelis Troost) and Cornelis Ploos van Amstel. The plates in this book are reminiscent of Adriaan van Ostade's wonderful genre works. Showing peasants, playing children, and scenes of everyday Dutch life they are a wonderful visual record of Dutch vernacular culture. The original drawings were in the collection of Hendrik Dibbets, a Leiden admirer and collector of Chalon's work. The first edition appeared in 1779. It closes with a 4-page publisher's stock catalogue.
WorldCat (3 copies); this edition not in HPB Database; for Chalon: Anna de Haas, Chalon, Christina, in: Digitaal Vrouwenlexicon van Nederland (online); 1001 Vrouwen 552.
