This memoir of Bewick’s life has been through many editions since its first appearance in 1862 - 34 years after Bewick’s death. The text established by Bewick’s daughter Jane with the unwelcome help of her printer, Robert Ward was a smoothed out, repunctuated and abridged version of the original manuscript.
