Philadelphia: James A, Bill, 1850 Stated First American Edition from the Fourth and Greatly Improved London Edition. All twenty plates are present many with overlays, one page of ads in the back. Originally the property of a Dr. Sam A. Jones of Englewood, N.J.. Pages are all nice and clean with some of the plates darkening, one plate of text with a little foxing. Backstrip is missing and front board is detached, text is tight. A good clean copy that needs some relatively minor repairs.

Publisher's sheep, with elaborate blindstamped border on boards; nicely rebacked, preserving part of the original backstrip, with gilt-stamped lettering in new leather spine label, endpapers also renewed. First American Edition, "from the fourth and greatly improved London Edition, carefully revised, and with additional notes and plates." Includes 21 lithographed plates, most hand-colored, with movable flaps. Corners and edges of boards scuffed; some light foxing (as expected), occassionally affecting plates -- but, for the most part, bright and clean.

Philadelphia: Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. Very Good. 1848. First American Edition. Leather. Lithographs, with overlays; colored; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 1848 Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. , Philadelphia. "First American edition from the fourth and greatly improved London edition". There were at least two ealier American printings in 1847 by Wagner & McGuigan and by Thomas, Cowperthwait. Bound in a later 19th century full calf with red morocco title label brightly lettered in gilt to spine. Soundly bound with contents complete, including the subscriber's lists at front and the single page ad at rear. Including the tissue garded frontis there are 21 full page lithograhped plates, most with mechanical overlays and hand colored with tissue guards. At leat one plate has a tissue guard integral between the colored overlay leaves. Table I. B. - one of the non overlay lithographs with 4 figures of the pelvis - had apparently come loose from the book and has some light…
