Full brown leather over boards with gold stamping on black title label on spine. Title page dated 1847. Copyright page dated 1836. 597 + 592 + 648 pages. In fair condition. Leather is dry, flaking, scratched, and scuffed. Spine of volume two has a two inch tear. All gutters cracked; volume two covers mostly detached. Aside from covers, binding feels relatively secure. Ex-Library with associated markings and wear plus additional markings from second owner inside front covers. Toned and foxed throughout, but does not affect the readability of the text. The copyright page states 'first printing'. Includes a preface to the 1957 revised edition. Robert K. Merton is generally considered the father of modern Sociology and a major influence in the study of criminology. This was his first book and has become established as a work of central importance in the social science. The 1968 edition includes the complete 1957 text and two new essays; "On the History and Systematic of Sociological Theory," and "On Sociological Theories of the Middle Range," This is a very good copy in a dust jacket with moderate edge wear, mainly at the top. There is some soiling and darkening of the spine. The jacket is now protected with a Brodart cover.

Number 1549 of a limited edition.A fort was built near the mouth of the Moose River on James Bay North East Ontario, Canada, by Charles Bayly, governor of the Hudson's Bay Company, in the early 1670s. In the struggle between the English and French in Canada, the fort changed hands several times and shortly after 1696 was destroyed. In 1730 the company built a post close to the ruins of the original fort. This post has been in continuous operation to the present day. This is the first publication of the Record Society to deal specifically with affairs at the "Bottom of the Bay."Condition:Pages unread. A very good to fine copy without jacket as issued.
