About This Item

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1892. First American Edition. hardcover. Owner name of Virginia Elizabeth Murdoch on the front endpaper dated 19 February 1892. Hinges sound, light wear. Near Fine but for the missing signature. Publisher's decorated brown cloth. Illustrated with 11 full-page plates. A "revised" edition was published later in 1892 by Harper restoring the cuts made in this edition published in January due to their controversial and sexual nature. This copy is an oddity as signature 24, pages 369-384, were never bound in, though one can only tell by examining the contents as there is no visible sign in the book's appearance to indicate the missing signature.
