The collection has sections "Poems" and "Songs and Other Musical Pieces", between them the prose poem "Letter to a Wound". 8vo, blue cloth much rubbed and worn at extremities including 1" tear along backstrip at crown, lettering entirely gone from black inset on spine, rough-cut fore-edge, hinges cracked, foxing to end papers, smudges on a few pages. Date November 1945 and name of former owner (later Prof.) Warner Berthoff on ffep, his underscoring and notes on ffep and approximately 80 pages.

Of this collected verse, Auden writes that the poems here fall into two categories: pieces he has "nothing against except their lack of importance; these must inevitably form the bulk of any collection since, were he to limit it to the [other] class alone, to those poems for which he is honestly grateful, his volume would be too depressingly slim".
