The First UK printing published by The Nonesuch Press in 1924. Printed at the Curwen Press from the wood and in Rudolf Koch's Neuland type on Zander's hand made paper. This is number '300' of an edition of only 375 numbered copies. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. Original black cloth binding with bright gilt titles. Some slight rubbing at the spine tips with a little loss at the upper spine. Pages unopened to top edges in right angled or French fold format as published and all twelve B/W woodcuts by Paul Nash are present. Very slight toning to the endpapers and extreme page edges otherwise a very clean copy. The binding remains tight. The very fragile WRAPPER is in Very Good- condition. Some edge-wear with loss - see images. A professional Japanese tissue repair to the spine on the verso with a paper repair to the verso of the front panel also. Fading to the spine and edges but the black spine titling is still present. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. Despite its faults, the scarce wrapper presents well and is in far better condition than usually encountered. One of the major highlights of The Curwen and Nonesuch Presses. Collectible with such attributes. Loosely inserted is an 'Invitation to a private viewing of the Paul Nash Memorial Exhibition' held at the Tate Gallery in 1948. This single folded leaf invitation reproduces 'the sun and the moon' from Genesis. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

Description:
(London): Nonesuch Press, 1924. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Quarto, unpaginated. A crisp, clean, very nice copy, about fine, lacking the dust jacket. This is number 19 of 375 limited copies. A stark and lovely woodcut-driven work, which, while not a "wordless novel," clearly anticipates the style of Lynd Ward and his contemporaries. Nash was a well-kown artist, whose unsettling, eerily whimsical landscapes of World War I helped usher modernist trends into British art. His woodcuts in this volume are no less impressive than his canvas work.
