About This Item

Philadelphia: John C. Winston Company, 1932. Early printing of this Newbery Medal winning book about a Chinese youth, his apprenticeship and adventures. Both author and illustrator spent some years in China, and the book is regarded as a good starting point for discussions on Chinese culture and history, though from a western colonialist viewpoint. No edition or printing stated, as was Winston's practice at this time, but the second state, with dedication text present on page [iv] and text on the front jacket flap; after it won the Newbery Medal in 1933, the jacket art & text were changed to showcase the award - this copy does NOT mention the award. Laid in is about a third of an 'obi strip', a promotional paper band that would have been wrapped around part of the jacket. Hardcover in jacket, as pictured. Light wear to book, some foxing - mostly near the plates; subtle ink note on the free endsheet; jacket rubbed & tanned with short tears, chips, creasing, $2.50 price intact; frontispiece a bit cockled with foxing to the title page. Text clean; [vi], 265 pages; glossary, notes on Chinese culture of the period; drawings, some full-page, four color plates as called for. . Later Printing. Hard Cover. Good/Good. Illus. by Kurt Wiese. Thick Octavo.
