Description:
New York: Leavitt and Alle, 1854. 310pp. plus thirty-two plates (including engraved titlepage). Large octavo. Original publisher's morocco, stamped in blind and gilt, a.e.g. Corners bumped and rubbed. Faint dampstaining to lower edge of text, else internally clean. Very good. First edition of a comprehensive tour of 19th- century America. Included are views from the Upper Missouri, the Mississippi, Georgia, and historical sights throughout the original thirteen colonies. The work is patterned on Bartlett's AMERICAN SCENERY, and several plates bear the name of W.H. Bartlett. Curiously, the book is not described in Howes, Hamilton, or Percy Muir's work on Victorian illustrated Books. Richards is known as an illustrator of other works, and was probably responsible for many of the illustrations, while his exuberant prose relieves the gravity of fact with the grace of fiction.
