Kindergarten-Grade 2-Locker, well known for his atmospheric landscapes, has created a romantic and somewhat mystical vignette. One evening, a young girl hears a strange sound that beckons her. Following it into the hills, she comes upon an elderly bagpiper and listens to him play until the sun sets. Later that night, as she falls asleep, she wonders if the piper was a dream, and then she hears his music again, faintly in the distance. The shifting light, from dusk to sunset to moonlight, permeates the full-page paintings and is as much a presence as Anna or the piper. The figures are often seen against a dramatic sweep of changing sky, and it is the light that sets the tone of the story. This brief account of a magical encounter glows with visual appreciation of the natural world.
