Opposite Contraries: The Unknown Journals of Emily Carr and Other Writings by Carr, Emily

For the first time in book form, here are the expurgated sections of Emily Carr's published journals, her important "Lecture on Totems" about Native art and people, and a selection of letters to and from several key figures in her life. The unpublished journal entries include long passages about her first meeting with Sophie Frank, a Squamish basketmaker who became a longtime friend, anguished meditations on her spiritual mission, musings about Native culture and the White community's reaction to it, and thoughts about her sisters and relatives. A good deal of space is devoted to the subjects of love and marriage. Susan Crean's introductions to the book and to each of the three sections provide an illuminating context, both historical and cultural, for this previously unpublished material and assess its contribution to the story of Emily Carr.
