Sauk City, Wisconsin: Sauk City, WI: Arkham House, 1939, 1st edition, First Printing, 1939. ----------hard cover, a great copy, black cloth, wee bit of rubbing to lower edge of boards and corners, corners are not bumped, a 1/8" nick to the cloth at the center of the upper spine tip (really quite small), some offset to verso of the boards, book is completely square and tight and does not have any finger marks or rubbing to the cloth on the boards and spine, top edge of text block is dusty, overall a close to Near Fine copy but I'll call this Very Good+ because of that tiny nick to the cloth, this copy has TWO DUSTJACKETS, this copy has the original dustjacket which is Good only and has been price clipped, the dustjacket has numerous chips and tears with some loss along the extremities, the upper corner of the front panel of the dustjacket has had a 2" square loss affecting the "E" & "R" in Outsider, I have lasered that portion from another jacket and laid it in place with some archival tape so visually this looks much more appealing, the verso of the dustjacket has had a brown paper backing attached most of which I was able to remove, however there are still portions that remain glued to the verso of the jacket, the brown paper backing does not have any show through to the front of the dustjacket, a bit of cello tape at upper spine tip is barely noticeable, please ask for additional scans of any portion of the book or dustjacket that you wish to see, -----as well this copy has a FINE facsimile copy of the DUSTJACKET which makes this book look absolutely brilliant on the shelf, ------in spite of the availability of many 1st editions online (making many authors like Hemingway and Steinbeck seem almost commonplace) the first two Arkham House volumes of Lovecraft writings ( The Outsider and Beyond the Wall of Sleep ) remain elusve, ----------this collection contains: Howard Phillips Lovecraft: OUTSIDER by August derleth and Donald Wandrei; and the following stories: Dagon; Polaris; Celephais; Hypnos; The Cats of Ulthar; The Strange High House in the Mist; The Statement of Randolph carter; The Silver Key; Through the Gates of the Silver Key; The Outsider; The Music of Erich Zann; The rats in the Walls; Cool Air; He; The Horror at red Hook; The Temple; Arthur Jermyn; The Picture in the House; The festival; The Terrible Old man; The Tomb; The Shunned House; In The Vault; Pickman's Model; The haunter of the dark; The Dreams in the Witch-House; The Thing on the Doorstep; The Nameless City; The Lurking Fear; The Call of Cthulhu; The Colour Out of Space; The Dunwich Horror; At the Mountains of Madness; The Shadow Out of Time; The Shadow over Innsmouth; The Whisperer in darkness, and the essay Supernatural Horror in Literature, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo ///NOT SIGNED ---GUARANTEED to be AVAILABLE///. Publisher's black buckram, smooth spine with gilt vertical titling, midnight blue (unclipped) dust jacket featuring a fantastical design by Virgil Finlay (signed near foot of front cover). ◆A little fraying to head edge of jacket, quarter-inch chips to it at head and tail of spine, spine and rear cover of jacket lightly toned, one corner at head of book spine lightly bumped, a couple pages with faint thumbing, very light brown stain to upper fore-edge corner of a score of leaves, but an excellent copy--clean and fresh inside and out with few signs of use--in a very good jacket. This first collected edition of tales by American horror legend H. P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) is deemed "a landmark in weird fiction" by ANB. The compilation of stories originally published in "Weird Tales" pulp magazine was the…

Sauk City, Wisconsin: Arkham House,, 1939. Launching Arkham House: a "legendary book in supernatural literature" First edition, sole printing, of the first omnibus edition of Lovecraft's fiction, in the striking dust jacket by the celebrated fantasy illustrator Virgil Finlay. The book was critically hailed for its selection of the author's best stories, from "Dagon" to "At the Mountains of Madness". It also includes his final revised version of "Supernatural Horror in Literature", among the finest literary analyses of the genre's history. Arkham House, named after Lovecraft's fictional New England city, was founded by the late author's friends Derleth and Wandrei to preserve his serialized stories in this hardback edition. Their labour of love marks "the beginning of serious specialist publishing of fantastic fiction in America" (Bleiler). The print run comprised 1,268 copies, and no subsequent edition was published. Provenance: from the substantial occult library of the Arkham House collector and…

Sauk City, WI: Arkham House, 1939. First Editions. The first major collection of Lovecraft's weird fiction and the first production by the legendary Arkham House - a landmark in 20th century genre publishing. The 32 stories written for various pulp magazines were gathered and preserved by Lovecraft's friends, August Derleth and Donald Wandrei, who founded Arkham House in 1939 to preserve and publish the best of Lovecraft's fiction. The stories "range from early exercises in Dunsanian pastiche to the mature and highly distinctive tales of the Cthulhu Mythos, which construct a horrific cosmological and historical context for human history. Luckless protagonists who stumble upon various dire intrusions of Cthulhu and his kin, or who unwisely pursue dangerous inquiries in the appropriate revelatory tomes, are inevitably brought to repulsively stick ends. Lovecraft became the consummate master of the confirmatory ending, in which what has been suspected all along finally becomes manifest" (Barron, Horror…
