The Domesday Book permits English citizens to view their heritage and their lives foreshadowed in the careful lettering of 11th century scribes. There are more than 12,500 entries in 37 gazetteers.
During the winter of 1085, Kign William sat down with his Christmas court and commanded them to make a survey of the whole of England, to set a value on the land he conquered 19 years previously. As a result, Royal Commissioners were sent throughout the 37 Norman counties, to ask questions of every landowner. The data were recorded in this Domesday Book.
