Blind stamped cloth covers show wear at spine ends, and a little at corners. Gilt stamped lettering on spine remains good. Small sticker of a previous owner is seen on the front paste down. There are just a few small penciled notes on the end leaves as well as some very light soiling. The half title page has been torn from the book. There is a little light foxing seen on plates, and some of the text/ads is a little darkened. . Cloth - Hard Cover. Fair+/No Dust Jacket.

Entire exterior heavily scuffed, and spine label chipped. Hairline crack forming on edge of front cover and spine, though the board remains securely enough attached for normal handling. Contains the signature of a U.S. Army hospital steward on the front free endpaper, and another early owner's inscription on the front pastedown. Pages lightly age-toned and foxed; more visible speckling in the section of plates and on rear endpapers. One of the blank endpapers in back is torn. Otherwise, text unmarked and binding tight. An important early study of venereal disease, illustrated with a section of plates in the back. John Hunter (1728-1793) was a leading surgeon in his day, though his theories regarding gonorrhea and syphilis have since been proven incorrect.

The eminent surgeon John Hunter, best known for this treatise on sexually transmitted disease, was a pioneer of experimental pathology and was responsible for the opening of a museum of anatomy in London in which the cutaneous manifestations of syphilis figured prominently. The Royal College of Surgeons sponsors an annual lecture in Hunter's memory.
