Presidential Gift Bookplate On Front Endpaper, With Color Scene At Top, And Elaborate Printing "Christmas / 1939 / A Merry Christmas / From / The President / And Mrs. Roosevelt", But Not Signed Or Otherwise Marked. The Book Was A Gift To Either Rudolph Forster, White House Staff Member And Assistant To The President Since The 1890'S, Or To His Son, Warren Rudolph Forster, A Banker; With Warren Forster's Bookplate. "Rudolph Forster Was Executive Clerk And Administrative Officer In Charge Of Executive Papers At The White House Until His Death In 1943. He Had Piled Up Nearly Fifty Years Of Service To Eight Presidents. His Job Was To Remind The President That A Bill, For Example, Must Be Acted Upon In A Certain Amount Of Time, Or That By Law He Must Fill A Vacancy Within A Definite Period. He Was Also Responsible For The 'Orderly Handling Of Documents' And Supervision Of The Large Clerical Staff. He Was The Most Important Permanent Official At The White House.
