W.G. for Richard Chiswel. 1669. 12mo. 17cm, thefirst edition, xx,374pp., blank leaf at end, 2 engraved plates, smallholes in title, and minor stains on a few leaves, trimmed, but a verygood to fine copy, in contemporary full calf, lacking front endpapers,bookplate of Hugh Cecil, Earl of Lonsdale. (cgc) Wing s3833. Duveen.Bibliotheca Alchemica et Chemica, 552. Has a great deal of interest tothe chemist as it discusses hermetic medicine minerals and metals andtheir properties, etc. Simpson was an admirer of "Paracelsus". He wasthe first to recognize the presence of sulphur', or hydrogen sulphide,in Harrogate water. Simpson mixed sulphur and nitre and was convincedthat mineral waters, hot springs, volcanoes, earthquakes, meteor and eventhe occasional luminosity of the sea were all due to a mixture of thesesbodies with water or vapour. - Cf.
