About This Item

Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press / Loeb Classical Library. As New in As New dust jacket. 1992. First Edition. Later Printing. Hard Cover. Publisher's full green cloth, gilt lettering on spine, gilt medallion on cover. English translation by W. R. Paton. Text in Greek and English. Polybius (c.200 – c.118 BC) was a Greek historian of the Hellenistic Period noted for his work, The Histories, which covered the period of 264–146 BC in detail. The work describes the rise of the Roman Republic to the status of dominance in the ancient Mediterranean world and included his eyewitness account of the Sack of Carthage in 146 BC. Polybius is also renowned for his ideas concerning the separation of powers in government, later used in Montesquieu's The Spirit of the Laws and in the drafting of the United States Constitution. Polybius’s theme is how and why the Romans spread their power as they did. The work is a vital achievement despite the incomplete survival of all but the first five of forty books. . Both the volume and the unclipped dust jacket are in perfect, unmarked condition. AS NEW/AS NEW.. Loeb Classical Library Series. Vol. 160. 16mo 6" - 7" tall. (vi), 536 pp .
