Pages have light tanning and foxing throughout. Water staining to page edges throughout, text remains unaffected. Previous owner's inscriptions and ink staining to front free endpaper. Boards have light shelf-wear with corner bumping. Light sunning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends. Creasing to both boards. Wear marks overall.

Attractive early printing of this early Walpole fiction (first published 1910), signed and inscribed large and bold by Walpole on the front flyleaf: "With best wishes / from Hugh Walpole / Dec: 5 '15." Laid in is a brief, amusing, undated contemporary note from "Cousin Marcus" presenting this copy ("Recently Hugh Walpole inscribed one of his books To Mrs Stevenson a Cornish Woman from Hugh Walpole A Cornish Man It pleased me very much and I got him to autograph one for you....").
