The six books are: Unc' Billy Possum has a Fright; Peter Rabbit Puts on Airs; Jerry Muskrat Wins Respect; Jumper the Hare Cannot Sleep; Buster Bear Invites Old Mr. Toad to Dine; and Grandfather Frog Stays in the Smiling Pool. All of the books are illustrated in color and B&W by Harrison Cady. Extremely rare.. Four of the books contain a brief gift inscription (in pencil) on the title page dated Christmas 1925, and one contains the owner's name and date (December 25, 1925) in the "My Book" box on the fep, but all are otherwise unmarked. One gathering slightly sprung. Publishers dark green cloth with gilt and black decorative band across the top of the front board and the top and bottom of the spine. Black decorative roll to the bottom of the front board. Title on gilt to the middle of the front board. Spine lettered and decorated in gilt. Rear board with blind stamped floral roll to the top and bottom. Floral decorative endpapers. Neat two line inscription to the front free endpaper. The rear endpapers have an early previous owner's name and address written in red crayon to the free endpaper and a few short lines to the pastedown. Writing in pencil inside front cover explaining the edition and rarity. 160 p. Includes: illustrations, index. Extremely rare Initial Teaching Alphabet experimental edition of the New Basic Readers of Fun with our Friends. This was piloted in a few select schools but was abandoned 1-2 years after it began. The I.T.A. was developed by Sir James Pitman and was intended for use with children with extreme reading disabilities. This is a first and ONLY edition printed in 1965. Publishers original grey/dark green paper covered, bevelled edged, boards with lettering and illustration to the front board by Dulac, printed in Gold, white, orange and light green. Rear board with circular design printed in white, gold and green. Plain yellow cloth spine. Some minor marking to the spine but overall a lovely clean, tight, near fine copy. Among the artists best and most imaginative works, this title is also one of the scarcest books that he illustrated. Volume 10 only of Friedrich Bertuch's famous Picture-book for Children, an illustrated encyclopedia for children. With 97 (of 100) hand-coloured copperplates (missing plates 4, 36, 58). Explanatory text in German and French.The Picture-Book was published in 12 volumes from 1790 to 1843 and eventually included 1,185 handcoloured copperplates. Bertuch wished to reproduce the magic of discovery, and mixed engravings of plants, animals, shells, minerals, volcanoes and technical inventions in a utopian chaos, so that a child could encounter afresh the wonders of the natural world at the turn of every page.
