Description:
A monumental event in American photographic history: the hanging of the Lincoln assassination conspirators.
Within two weeks of Lincoln's murder, eight accused conspirators were in custody. President Andrew Johnson ordered a trial by military commission. After a seven-week trial in May and June, the commission retired to deliberate. On July 5 Johnson approved the verdicts and sentences including four death sentences. On July 6 the verdicts were revealed, and the very next day the four executions were carried out simultaneously.
These momentous images represent the dawn of photojournalism in America.
Alexander Gardner, the leading photographer in Washington, secured permission to document the carefully orchestrated event. Gardner worked with his assistant Timothy O'Sullivan to create these images. The collection comprises four photographs documenting the proceedings:
No. 1 Arrival on Scaffold—The execution party, prisoners and guards, ministers and others arrive on the scaffold. The… Read More

Description:
Mammoth albumen print (17 ½ x 22 in), mounted, oval gilt-rule mat. Retouched vignetted enlargement. A few spots, some toning. Very good condition.
This famous "Gettysburg portrait," with Lincoln looking directly into the camera, was made just days before he delivered the Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863.
A giant of American photography, Alexander Gardner is credited with introducing the large-format Imperial portrait to the United States while working as a staff photographer for Mathew Brady. Gardner left Brady's employ in early 1863, and his studio quickly rivaled Brady's for the quality and extent of its war and portrait photography. Gardner first photographed Lincoln as president-elect while working for Brady, and he went on to take Lincoln's portrait more than any other photographer.
Lincoln sat for Gardner on several occasions, usually visiting his studio on Sunday to avoid crowds. Lincoln sat for this splendid portrait on Sunday, November 8, 1863. His private secretaries… Read More

Description:
The most celebrated collection of Civil War photographs, Gardner's Photographic Sketch Book of the War contains "many of the most graphic and memorable Civil War images that have come down to us" (ICP). The photographs covered the entire conflict from Manassas in 1862 to the dedication of the monument at Bull Run in June 1865. Gardner presents the photographs, each accompanied by his descriptive text, as "mementoes of the fearful struggle," recording war as it had never been recorded before.
Alexander Gardner joined Mathew Brady's studio in the 1850s and introduced the new wet-plate collodion process there. This process was employed in the photographs of the Sketch Book. When Brady's sight deteriorated in the 1850s, Gardner became the studio's chief photographer. Working with the Army of the Potomac as a civilian photographer, Gardner happened to be present during the Battle of Antietam. Carrying his heavy equipment over the battlefield in the immediate aftermath of this bloodiest of battles, he… Read More

Albumen prints (7 ½ x 9 in.), mounted. The first with contemporary manuscript title on verso: "#7752 Execution of Capt Henry Wirz keeper of the Anderson Prison Pen, Reading the death warrant." The second with Taylor and Huntington printed caption, printed some years later. Very good condition.
These famous photographs by renowned Civil War photographer Alexander Gardner documents the execution of Andersonville prison commandant Henry Wirz. The event took place on November 10, 1865 in the courtyard of the Old Capitol Prison, now the site of the U.S. Supreme Court. 120 soldiers guarded the crowd of 200 spectators, while more onlookers clung to trees outside the prison yard. Gardner, who had photographed the execution of the Lincoln assassination conspirators in July, documented the event.
At its peak Andersonville held 32,000 men, making it larger than all but four cities in the South. Inhumane conditions and overcrowding led to a staggering death rate. 13,000 of the 45,000 men… Read More

Description:
[Alexander Gardner], 1866. First Edition. Retouched albumen prints, (5), measuring 7 x 6 inches on slightly large cards, each with pencil inscriptions, dated 1869, on verso, 3 with remnants of original backing paper and second inscriptions over the first, mat toning to O'Laughlin only, a bit of mat adhesive remnants at the edges of Atzerodt and Arnold. Very Good. Alexander Gardner's four month endeavor to photographically document the aftermath of the Lincoln assassination came to him through his his relationship with Allan Pinkerton, whose intelligence agency was the precursor to the Secret Service. Pinkerton granted Gardner unlimited access to the notorious crime's key people and places. On April 27th, Gardner arrived at the Washington Navy Yard and boarded the USS Montauk and Saugus, where 5 of the surviving conspirators were being held, blind-folded and manacled. There, he created a stunning series of intense, hauntingly intimate portraits of the doomed men awaiting their fates. Often noted… Read More

Description:
c. 1860. Rare original painting of the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. After a photograph by Civil War photographer Alexander Gardner. Scottish photographer Alexander Gardner immigrated to the United States in 1856 where he became best known for his photographs of the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln, and the execution of the conspirators to Lincoln's assassination. In near fine condition. In a period frame. The entire piece measures 20.75 by 16.75 inches. Rare and desirable. Abraham Lincoln served as the 16th President of the United States from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865.
