Description:
London: Short & Co, 1846. Poe, Edgar Allan (1809-49). Mesmerism "in articulo mortis." An astounding & horrifying narrative, shewing the extraordinary power of mesmerism in arresting the progress of death. 16pp. London: Short & Co., 1846. 213 x 138 mm. Without wrappers as issued; preserved in a cloth folding case. Light toning but a fine copy. Bookplate of American book collector Edward Hubert Litchfield (1879-1949). First Separate Edition of Poe's gruesome short story on the occult "powers" of mesmerism, originally published under the title "The facts in the case of M. Valdemar" in The American Whig Review of December 1845. "Poe plays with the idea that a dying person may be so imbued with magnetic fluid by a mesmerist that he can remain, although dead, in a kind of suspended death for months, until released by the mesmerist—at which point his body immediately turns into a pile of stinking, putrid slime. Taking it to be factual, people seriously debated whether such a horrifying use of mesmerism… Read More

Description:
Philadelphia: Tyndale, Mitchell & Co, 1870. Third Edition. Pamphlet. Good. The third separate printing of The Raven, following a Glasgow edition in 1869 (listed as BAL 16216 but not seen) and the illustrated version published by W. Jennings Demorest about July 1870 (Demorest's Illustrated Monthly printed an illustrated version of The Raven in its May 1870 issue of the magazine; by July of that year, Jennings Demorest was advertising the book version at 25 cents in wrappers and 50 cents in cloth). BAL (16213) also records an 1862 sheet music version. This edition, illustrated with four wood engravings by David Scattergood printed in black ink on a brown background, appears to have been offered as a premium by an enterprising printer who sold the idea to a number of companies near the end of 1870. This version was issued by Tyndale, Mitchell & Co., importers of china and stoneware from Europe. Johns Hopkins records a version from Singer Manufacturing and Brown has one from P. P. Hayes, a silversmith… Read More

TINY NICK ON SPINE CVR , It tells of a talking raven's mysterious visit to a distraught lover, tracing the man's slow descent into madness. The lover, often identified as being a student, is lamenting the loss of his love, Lenore. The raven, sitting on a bust of Pallas (the goddess of wisdom), seems to further instigate his distress with its constant repetition of the word "Nevermore". Binding has some wear at corners and edges, but is attractive with gilt tooling on a tan, age-toned leather, spine somewhat darkened; top of spine has 2 small splits and is worn, medium foxing throughout. The date, 1843, appears on the spine, on the printed title page and on the engraved title page; the date 1842 appears on the copyright page. A gift inscription appears twice - on the front free end page and the first blank reading, "Phebe T. Bussell's book / Presented by her father / Feb. 19, 1845." On pages 133 to 151 is the first appearance of Edgar Allan Poe's classic short story The Pit and the Pendulum.
