Description:
London: Faber and Faber, 1950. 1st English edition, full black cloth with gold lettering on spine, with printed dust jacket. (Gallup A61b.) A presentation copy, inscribed by T. S. Eliot upon publication, to Elisabeth Jungmann (Lady Beerbohm). Eliot was the editor of the present volume, as well as the publisher at Faber when this volume was issued. The inscription reads: "for / Elisabeth Jungmann / from T. S. Eliot / Sept. 1950" in blue fountain pen ink on the first FEP. At the time of publication, Elisabeth Jungmann was serving as Max Beerbohm's secretary and confidante, living in Genoa, and a neighbor of Ezra Pound. Soon after, Elisabeth Jungmann married Max Beerbohm. The relationship between Eliot and Pound is legendary, and both men enjoyed a mutual friendship as well with the Beerbohms. Far beyond just an interesting association copy, the present volume links two of the most influential early modern poets who edited and championed each other's work. Minimal wear to jacket not withstanding, a fine… Read More

Slight wear on the outside right cover as per photos otherwise in fine shape. The editors of AUTHORS TAKE SIDES ON THE SPANISH WAR, which was published in London by the Left Review in 1937, posed two questions to a list of influential poets and writers of the 1930's: "Are you for, or against, the legal Government and the People of Republican Spain? Are you for, or against, Franco and Fascism?" This historical and important document consists of 148 contributors and 10,000 words on their stand on fascism and democracy. Description:
New York: Boni & Liveright, 1927. Second printing (February 1927). 8vo, frontispiece by Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, 231 pp., original dark blue cloth, spine and edges slightly rubbed and faded. Inscribed by Hart Crane to the artist John W. Taylor "To Jack Taylor, Good friend and counselor, Hart Crane, December '28". The recipient, we confidently think, is the Baltimore-born Woodstlock artist John Williams Taylor, 1897-1983. Crane traveled to Europe in early December 1928, as did Taylor and Crane wrote in a March 29 letter to Sam Loveman that Taylor was "freshly arrived in Paris," and staying at his (Crane's) hotel. Crane's choice of a Pound volume as a gift, and the connection with Taylor provide an interesting line of inquiry.

[London], The Ovid Press, 1920. . First edition, first impression, number 178 of 200 copies, this being one of the 165 unsigned examples; 4to; woodcut initials by Edward Wadsworth, the usual, albeit very mild, toning to the title from the adjacent paste down; publisher's tan linen backed brown boards, white paper title label to upper board; a stunning copy, probably one of the three uncirculated copies that turned up the 1980s each vastly superior to any other example we have seen. This fabulous and resonant book - produced by John Rodker at his recently formed Ovid Press - contains some of Pound's greatest writing. Gallup A19; Connolly Modern Movement, 35.

Description:
Paris: Mercure de France, 1922. pp. 307-320. Removed from publication, bound together with Japanese tissue, some foxing and creasing, annotated in the hand of Olga Rudge. pp. 307-320. Ezra Pound's own copy, docketed by Olga Rudge. This copy was taken from the pages of the Mercure de France and kept by Pound. It's docketed in the hand of Olga Rudge, who began an affair with Pound in 1923, and would be his partner for the rest of their lives. Pound was one of the greatest champions of Joyce's work, working tirelessly to see it published and supported critically and financially. Already in 1918 he wrote of Ulysses, then being serialized in the Little Review, that "He has done what Flaubert set out to in Bouvard et Pécuchet, done it better, more succinct, an epitome" (Pound, "Joyce", The Future, 2.6, May 1918; also Read, p. 139). In 1922, shortly after the publication of Ulysses, he would elaborate in his Paris letter for The Dial, and would put it to French readers in the Mercure de France. Pound… Read More

Chicago: Ralph Fletcher Seymour, 1950. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. First edition. Boards a little splayed else near fine in a slightly spine-faded and rubbed, very good or better dustwrapper with some foxing at the flap folds, and the front flap professionally reinforced on the verso. Inscribed by Pound to Howard Gill, during the time that Pound was confined to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, DC after World War II, with Pound's usual scrawl taking up most of the front fly, and with a slightly cryptic inscription: "Howard Gill from Ezra Pound. Remembering Piranesi." Essays on the future of art in America. Originally published serially in a London periodical in 1911, and intended to be published as a book in the U.S. The manuscript was revised by Pound in 1913 but thought lost until it resurfaced in 1950. Gill was a noted criminologist often accused of leniency towards his prisoners. He was the general administrator of the District of Columbia's prison system, and briefly had… Read More

The blossoms of the apricot / blow from the east to the west, / And I have tried to keep them from falling First edition, first impression, number 31 of 200 copies printed on Canson-Montgolfier soleil velin paper, from a total edition of 212 copies; there were also 10 signed copies on Texas Mountain paper, and 2 copies on vellum. This publication marks the first appearance of the poems that would make up Pound's Cantos, his magnum opus. When Cyril Connolly wrote The Modern Movement in 1965, he selected XXX Cantos as "the best work in Pound's 'poem of some length'". Connolly remarks that "one enters them like a sunlit church with a service going in a dark corner and suddenly the music pierces... A moment later all is muttering and mumbling". The Hours Press was owned and operated by Nancy Cunard, heiress to the Cunard shipping fortune. She first met Pound in 1915, when he approached her mother for support for Joyce and Wyndham Lewis.
