Description:
Washington, DC: , 1942-45. FDR's official White House portfolio, containing official signed stationery and autograph notes A superbly evocative memento of the wartime FDR White House, a handsome commercial leather portfolio personalized for Roosevelt's use and containing some 20 leaves of various White House stationery and printed appointment documents all signed by Roosevelt in preparation for use. Such personal artefacts relating to FDR rarely appear on the open market. Roosevelt has made autograph notes on three of the folders: "Robert Ford to come Wed or Thurs" (on cover of "To Sign"); "John F(?) - How handle insurance on production?" (on front of "The President / For Reading"); and "support of me - / tie in inflation - / Cash surrender - 4% compound int. from date armistice / $1,200,000,000" (inside "Miscellaneous Correspondence"). Other documents and stationery are retained within one of the five manila folders, each of which is titled holographically in pencil by a number of unidentifiable…

Washington, DC: The White House, Christmastide,, 1942. Presentation copy from FDR to his Secretary of War First edition, number 6 of 100 copies only, inscribed by Roosevelt to his secretary of war on the front free endpaper: "For Henry L. Stimson with the affectionate regards of his old friend Franklin D. Roosevelt Christmas 1942". A superb association copy of this volume collecting Roosevelt and Churchill's early war speeches. Stimson (1867-1950) served as US secretary of war from 1940 to 1945, the whole period of US involvement in the Second World War, under both Roosevelt and Truman. In a very long career, he had also served as secretary of war under President Taft from 1911 to 1913, and as secretary of state from 1929 to 1933 under President Hoover. A lifelong Republican, Stimson was appointed to the position to strengthen bipartisan support for Roosevelt's foreign policy and preparation for war. Despite their political differences, the pair had a strong working relationship. Stimson's overall…

Roosevelt.""This is one of FDR's Christmas books, which FDR presented to family and friends. This particular book includes many of his speeches from the last six months of 1940 through January 20, 1941. The Christmas books are notoriously difficult for bibliographers due to FDR's decision to print them privately and the very small limitations used for each work (generally 50-100 copies). ""These…

Bound in full light bown pigskin, with metallic plaque of the Seal of the United States inset into the upper cover, now with a fine patina, pigskin doublures and silk endpapers. Fine. In quarter leather and marbled boards pull off slipcase. First edition, one of 75 (but probably one of only 7 in this binding). 97, [3] pp. 1 vols. 4to. Inscribed to Morgenthau in the Deluxe Binding. A sumptously produced White House Christmas book, commemorating FDR's nearly month-long diplomatic mission to promote "hemispheric solidarity" with South America. The book was issued in an uncertain, though undoubtedly strictly limited, number, with two issues--in full pigskin, as seen here, and half pigskin and marbled boards. The colophon calls for 75 copies, with the more desirable full pigskin binding scheduled to run to 50 copies for distribution to South American…

Description:
Washington DC: U.S. Government Printing Office, 1939. First Edition. The fifth and rarest of FDR's Christmas books, bar none. Unlike all of the other books in the series, this one has neither a printed nor an autographed colophon. A June 26, 1939 letter from Pete Jarman, Vice-Chairman of the Joint Congressional Committee on Printing to Steve Early states that he directed the Public Printer "to deliver to your office twenty-five copies of a deluxe edition of House Document No.212...entitled, Proceedings at the Ceremony...". Seven of those copies are accounted for in the FDR Library. There is an inadvertent touch of comedy in the splendid photographs included in this volume. Three speakers preceded Roosevelt to the House rostrum, with FDR waiting in a seat just to the right of the lectern. The photo of Speaker Bankhead shows the President sitting alert and erect. When Majority Leader Barkley spoke, the President's head was resting in his hand, but his eyes were still fastened on the speaker. By the…

Because they were all planographed or mimeographed to maintain their homemade appearance, their production didn't require a formal publisher and thus the exact number remains unknown. All, however, were issued in restricted editions for private distribution. The present log concerns FDR's Gulf of Mexico cruise on the U.S.S. Potomac. It also…

Description:
c.1930s. Presented to his long-term secretary Inscribed by Roosevelt to Grace Tully, "To Grace from FDR". The photograph shows Roosevelt talking cheerfully with Cardinal George Mundelein, Archbishop of Chicago from 1915 until his death. Mundelein has additionally inscribed the photograph "To Miss Grace Tully with best Christmas wishes and my blessing for herself and those close to her. George Cardinal Mundelein". Grace Tully along with Marguerite LeHand was Roosevelt's principal secretary during his years as president. The use of female secretaries broke with tradition, with all prior presidential secretaries men. But LeHand's connection with FDR went back to 1920, before his polio attack, and she was a consistent and loyal companion through the gruelling early years of his recovery. Tully's tenure dated from his 1928 campaign for governor of New York. When he won the presidency in 1932, Roosevelt had no hesitation about bringing these two loyal, trusted and discreet assistants - both Irish Catholics…

Description:
[Likely Hyde Park, , before 1940]. A relaxed Roosevelt, presented to his long-term secretary Inscribed to Grace Tully: "For Grace from Franklin D. Roosevelt [arrow in Roosevelt's hand to someone taking notes] not you!". Tully along with Marguerite LeHand was Roosevelt's principal secretary during his years as president. The photograph shows a relaxed and jovial FDR, taken sometime during his second term and likely at his Hyde Park residence in the Hudson Valley. The condition of his legs is clearly discernible beneath the trousers - an aspect of his condition he normally took pains to conceal. Just as visible is the mole over FDR's left eye, which he had removed in 1940, and which some biographers speculate might have been a melanoma. The use of female secretaries broke with tradition, with all prior presidential secretaries men. But LeHand's connection with FDR went back to 1920, before his polio attack, and she was a consistent and loyal companion through the gruelling early years of his recovery.…

1941. Rare original black and white photograph of Franklin D. and Eleanor Roosevelt sitting together at a table, signed by both, dated Christmas 1941. The photograph measures 8 inches by 10 inches. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 16.5 inches by 18.5 inches. In mid-1902, Franklin began courting his future wife Eleanor Roosevelt, with whom he had been acquainted as a child. Eleanor and Franklin were fifth cousins, once removed, and Eleanor was a niece of Theodore Roosevelt. They began corresponding with each other in 1902, and in October 1903,Franklin proposed marriage to Eleanor. On March 17, 1905, Roosevelt married Eleanor, despite the fierce resistance of his mother. While she did not dislike Eleanor, Sara Roosevelt was very possessive of her son, believing he was too young for marriage. She attempted to break the engagement several times. Eleanor's uncle, President Theodore Roosevelt, stood in at the wedding for Eleanor's deceased father, Elliott.
