Description:
Philadelphia and New York: J. B. Lippincott Company. 1955. First edition, first printing. First edition, first printing. Raymond Chandler's copy. Signed by the author. Publisher's original black and brown cloth with titles in black and brown to the spine, in the Edward Sorel illustrated dustwrapper. A very good or better copy, the binding square and firm with a little bumping to the spine tips and corners, the cloth bright and fresh. The contents, with the ownership inscription of Raymond Chandler in blue ink on the front endpaper, neat ticks next to ten of the 18 stories on the contents page and the ink stamp of The Mystery Writers of America (with publication date) in black to the front pastedown, are otherwise clean throughout. Complete with the rubbed and nicked dustwrapper that has several short closed tears, tiny chips to the corners and some fading of the spine. The rear panel is somewhat rippled. Not price-clipped ($3.00 to the lower front flap). With the ownership signature of… Read More

Description:
London: Routledge, 1937. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. (London: George Routledge & Sons, Ltd. 1937). First UK Edition. Publisher's black boards with gilt spine lettering. The book is clean and bright with just a little softening at the head and tail of the spine. Overall a near fine copy. In the RARE D/W priced 5s. net to the inside flap (as called for). The D/W is a near fine example with a couple of tiny chips and a handful of nicks at spine and flap fold ends; a bit of minor rubbing and soiling; and some faint staining to spine and front panel. The fourth most difficult Simenon after the three Hurst & Blackett's which are virtually impossible to find these days. No U. S. Edition. First Routledge Simenon. Extremely scarce (especially in this lovely, honest condition). Specialising in Simenon, I have only seen three wrappered first editions of this book since the millennium. This copy is, without doubt, the nicest I have handled. Photographs/scans available upon request.

Description:
London: Routledge, 1940. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. First UK Edition. Publisher's original buff cloth, titles to spine in black. Lovely clean copy. Publisher's original buff cloth, titles to spine in gilt. A lovely near fine copy (offsetting to the end-papers) with gold lettering on the spine (indicating that this is the likely first issue of the first edition). In the VERY RARE D/W priced 8/- net to the inside flap as called for. The D/W is bright but creased with a short closed tear to the foot of the front panel and head of front flap, and tape repair to verso. First edition in English, first impression, very scarce in D/W. The volume comprises two stories, La Danseuse du Gai-Moulin and Un Crime en Hollande, both of which were first published in French in 1931. In my experience the scarcest among the first six Routledge volumes. Rare. Scans invited. A much nicer copy than normally seen. Laid in are: (a) author's postcard sized card , signed inscribed and dated 1977 on his… Read More

Description:
All three volumes published in Paris: Artheme Fayard & Co., [1932]., 1932. First edition. All are first editions in the original photographic wrappers. The first title, LES 13 COUPABLES (THE THIRTEEN CULPRITS) is the exceedingly rare Queen's Quorum 85 and cited in QUEEN'S QUORUM, "In 1932 Georges Simenon wrote three books of short stories which the late Alexander Woollcott regarded so highly that he included all three in his recommended library of detective fiction. The best contains the precise and pithy investigations of examining magistrate Froget in LES 13 COUPABLES (The Thirteen Culprits). The two other books in the series are LES 13 ENIGMES (The Thirteen Enigmas) about G.7, and LES 13 MYSTERES (The Thirteen Mysteries) about armchair detective Joseph Leborgne, both issued in 1932 by Artheme Fayard." Each book in this trilogy is a short story collection and only the first in the series has been published in an English translation edition as THE 13 CULPRITS. In 1951 when… Read More

Description:
London: Routledge, 1940. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. (London: George Routledge & Sons Ltd 1940). First UK Edition. Publisher's blue boards with black lettering to the spine. A near fine copy. In the RARE photographic-style D/W priced 8s 3d net to the inside flap (as called for). The D/W which is prone to wear is about VG with a crease to the spine and the front flap, with foxing in places to the spine, back panel and rear flap and minor chipping, short tears and wear to the top edge. It would appear as if the foxing has got underneath the laminate used to manufacture the D/W. In our experience this is the scarcest Simenon first edition published by Routledge. We have only handled one other copy in recent years. Translated by Geoffrey Sainsbury. Contains two stories: Liberty Bar and The Madman of Bergerac. Rare. Photographs/scans available upon request.

Description:
London: Routledge, 1942. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. First UK Edition. Neat contemporary name and date on the front paste-down, outlines of some old pencil prices rubbed out on the FFEP and slight flattening to both the tip and tail of the spine otherwise a solid VG copy with bright and clean boards. The D/W (priced 8s net to the inside flap as called for) has benefitted from some highly skilled archival repair and refurbishment (by one of the UK's leading paper conservators) to a couple of minor chips and short tears and now shows as a most attractive example. In our experience "In Two Latitudes" is one of the scarcest wartime Simenon first editions and seldom found in attractive, shelvable condition (as this copy is). Included is a photograph of the D/W pre and post restoration. A fragile and scarce war-time production. This copy has lasted the test of time pretty well. Uncommon. Photographs/scans available upon request.

Description:
London: Routledge, 1940. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. First UK Edition. Publisher's original buff cloth, titles to spine in black. Lovely clean copy. The buff boards are bright and clean, though spine has a few small marks and is slightly bumped at ends with a small 1 cm closed tear on rear top edge. Black, rather than gold, lettering on spine means this may be the second issue of the first edition although this has not been conclusively proven. Pages are clean and tight with only slight tanning and no inscriptions. In the rare first issue D/W (priced 8/- net to the inside flap as called for) that is creased to the inside flap and foxed under the manufacturers lamination (common to the first three in this pre-war series), however is still all there. Its VG because of the foxing yet sits well on the shelves being likely the scarcest among the first six Routledge volumes. Rare. Scans invited.
