Signed by the artist, Arthur Rackham.
First edition, limited issue, being one of 750 copies signed by the artist. A wonderful collection of fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm featuring the spectacular illustrations of Arthur Rackham. Featuring 40 tipped-in color plates by Rackham with guards plus a profusion of full page and smaller black and whites. Translated by Mrs. Edgar Lucas. 325, [1] pages. London: Constable & Company Ltd, 1909 A very good copy of the 1st enlarged Rackham edition of Grimm's Tales with 40 tipped in colour plates and numerous black and white illustrations and designs. A scarce edition. Rackham first illustrated Grimm in 1900 and this edition contains reworked and new illustrations. Recently rebound in half leather with marbled boards and matching endpapers. Titles in gilt on the spine. Top page edges gilt. The binding is in very good to near fine condition with only slight wear. Internally there is spotting to preliminaries and the half title; and a signature of David Fyfe Anderson 1947 to a blank leaf. All the plates are tissue-guarded and are in nice clean condition. A few plates have a very slight and barely noticeable crease at the edge of the left hand corner. The plate opposite page 284 has a more noticeable crease again to the bottom left corner. The contents are in very good condition with occasional spotting mostly to page edges. A lovely copy.
