London: Joseph Cundall, 1846 First Cundall edition of a work published in 1823-26 as German Popular Tales. For the present edition, the work was revised and rearranged with an emphasis on the tales rather than on literary criticism. Orange cloth stamped decoratively in blind and gilt, rebacked with original gilt-decorated spine laid down. All edges gilt. Twelvemo. Title page printed in black and red. Engraved frontisportrait. Engravings by Byfield from George Cruikshank's and Ludwig Grimm's designs. Binding extremities lightly rubbed. Cloth slightly soiled and toned. Very minor foxing, the occasional small stain, and slight browning to edges. A very good copy. The collection, from which the following Tales are mainly taken, is one of great extent, obtained for the most part by MM. Grimm from the mouths of German peasants. The results of their labors ought to be peculiarly interesting to English readers, inasmuch as many of their national tales are proved to be of the highest Northern antiquity, and… Read More
