New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1929. First edition. Near Fine. Publisher's cloth binding stamped in black and yellow. Lacking the rare dust jacket. Scarce in this condition, with the spine and boards a brilliant, unfaded red. A bright, clean copy with no internal markings. The first of Hammett's novels, Red Harvest drew on his true-to-life experience as an operative for the notorious Pinkerton Detective Agency. Narrated by Continental Op, who becomes a recurring character in Hammett's work, the novel explores humans' violent tendencies when power and money are on the line. Arriving in town too late to meet his newspaper contact, who is murdered, Continental Op decides nevertheless to stay. He discovers that rival gangs have begun to loosen the control of the local industrialist (and father to the newspaperman) who had long been considered the most powerful figure in town. And as he begins to uncover how deeply corruption runs in the town, even implicating the police force,… Read more

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1929. First edition. Previous owner name in ink to front free endpaper, small light stains to margins of first several text pages, some rubs and a small stain to rear cover, a very good or somewhat better copy. No dust jacket. (19129). Octavo, pp. [1-12] [1-3] 4-270 [271: publisher's data] [272-276: blank] original red cloth, front stamped in yellow and black, spine stamped in yellow and black. Author's first novel, featuring his Continental Op character, one of the earliest and most important contributions to the establishment of the hard boiled detective. "Taken as a whole, and chronologically, the novels may be seen to speculate on the way a man should deal with disorder, on the things to which he should give his allegiance. In Red Harvest, the Continental Op is motivated by what appears to be a work ethic. He finds Personville corrupt and he cleans it up for no better reason than it's his job..." - St. James Guide to Crime & Mystery Writers… Read more

Mild foxing and dust-soil to text edges, wrappers lightly edgeworn, with shallow loss to crown, short tears and attendant creases to edges; rubber-stamped price to rear wrapper; Very Good+. A key issue, marking Horace McCoy's debut in Black Mask with a story called "The Devil Man," additionally containing stories by Erle Stanley Gardner, Julian Kilman, Victor Shaw, Tom Curry, and others. The issue is most notable for containing "Crime Wanted - Male or Female," Part Two (of four parts) of Dashiell Hammett's first novel, Red Harvest. The story corresponds to chapters 8-14 in the finished novel, and ended up being heavily revised at the behest of Hammett's publisher Blanche Knopf. Superb "tough-guy" cover by Fred Craft. Scarce.
