Octavo, three volumes, bound in contemporary three quarter calf over marbled boards with gilt titles to the spine. In very good condition. Armorial bookplates to each pastedown. Period gift inscription from the year of publication to the title page of Vol. I.: "Mary Anne King given her by her mother April 1813." An exceptional example of this landmark work in English literature, rare and desirable bound in contemporary calf.

London: Egerton, 1814. First. hardcover. Very good.. Three volumes, 12 mo. A very good first edition in three volumes of Austen's third published novel. Handsome leather binding, not original boards. Written between 1811 and 1813, Mansfield Park was the first of her works conceived and wholly written at Chawton. Published in May 1814 in an edition of around 1250 copies, the first edition was quickly sold out in a matter of months. The sale of the book was on a commission basis, with Austen retaining the copyright. A first edition set in original boards sold at Christie's in September, 2021, for $275,000.

Ex libris Supreme Court Justice and early supporter of Austen, Joseph Story (1779-1845), with his signature in several places, a handwritten marginal note in light pencil on page 70 (volume one) mentions a trip to Worcester, Massachusetts on May 8, 1841, the year Justice Story wrote the landmark Amistad decision. With the vanishingly scarce original chromolithographed gilt wrappers bound in to all volumes. A very scarce, early edition of these Austen novels. First US edition of Austen's third published novel, centering on the comedic neighborhood drama caused by the amateur production of a play, with the specter of the slave trade hovering beneath the plot. Morally upright Fanny gets pulled into a neighbor's scheming via an adaptation of Elizabeth Inchbald's well-known play, LOVERS' VOWS. Among Austen's works, MANSFIELD PARK especially demonstrates how careful contrasts of characters and plot twists can bring out subtle ironies. Edward Said famously argued that this novel demonstrates a casual acceptance of slavery through dwelling on the leisure of English people made possible through wealth from the slave trade - however, many critics have disputed this interpretation, clarifying not only that Austen read famous abolitionist authors but also that the heroine clearly disapproves of the plantation-owning character. Carey & Lea, 1833. First Edition. Leather Binding. Very Good. A delightful copy with great provenance of the first American edition of this Jane Austen classic. This copy is from the library of Cordelia Darrach, one of the great early 'fangirls' of the American literary public, with her signature on the title page of each volume ('Mrs. Cordelia Darrach'). A very good copy in mid-19th century brown morocco over marbled boards, spine with raised bands, gilt titling, and twin gilt rules at foot (light wear; text has some browning and foxing). Very lightly inscribed in pencil on front free endpaper: 'For Mrs [Nelson?] to while away yr leisure hours.' One of only 1250 copies issued of the first American edition, published just as Richard Bentley was re-issuing Austen's work in the UK. Gilson B5. No further American edition was issued until 1838. Title and half-title pages supplied. Bookplate to the pastedown of Vol. I. In near fine condition. A very attractive example of this desirable rarity.

Persuasion was first published in England six months after Austen's death. It concerns Anne Elliot, the 27 year old protagonist whose family moves to lower their expenses. Several ink spots on vol. 1, slight water damage and foxing between pastedown and endpapers. Light water damage at bottom of back pages of vol. 1.
