Description:
London: H.G. Clarke, 1844. Leather. Very Good. 5" by 3.5". None. An extremely scarce, beautifully produced edition of Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'Sense and Sensibility'. With the vanishingly scarce original chromolithographed gilt wrappers bound in to all volumes. A very scarce, early edition of these Austen novels. Both are real rarities even more so with the beautiful original wrappersThis edition of Sense and Sensibility was the first separate edition of the novel to be published after the expiration of the copyright in 1839. Pride and Prejudice is the scarcer of the two works in this edition. (Gilson E3) and (Gilson E2).  Gilson states that no copy has been seen in the original wrappers. But it has now, and its a beautiful example. All volumes are bound in contemporary dark green half calf with gilt spines. Volume II of Pride and Prejudice has been rebacked in a similar style. 'Pride and Prejudice' is arguably Austen's best known novel. It was first published in 1813 and has… Read More

Description:
Philadelphia: Carey & Lea, 1832. Very good.. First US edition of Austen's third published novel, centering on the comedic neighborhood drama caused by the amateur production of a play, with the specter of the slave trade hovering beneath the plot. Morally upright Fanny gets pulled into a neighbor's scheming via an adaptation of Elizabeth Inchbald's well-known play, LOVERS' VOWS. Among Austen's works, MANSFIELD PARK especially demonstrates how careful contrasts of characters and plot twists can bring out subtle ironies. Edward Said famously argued that this novel demonstrates a casual acceptance of slavery through dwelling on the leisure of English people made possible through wealth from the slave trade - however, many critics have disputed this interpretation, clarifying not only that Austen read famous abolitionist authors but also that the heroine clearly disapproves of the plantation-owning character. As is evident, MANSFIELD PARK has proven fertile ground for exploring wider political and moral… Read More

Description:
Carey & Lea, 1833. First Edition. Leather Binding. Very Good. A delightful copy with great provenance of the first American edition of this Jane Austen classic. This copy is from the library of Cordelia Darrach, one of the great early 'fangirls' of the American literary public, with her signature on the title page of each volume ('Mrs. Cordelia Darrach'). A very good copy in mid-19th century brown morocco over marbled boards, spine with raised bands, gilt titling, and twin gilt rules at foot (light wear; text has some browning and foxing). Very lightly inscribed in pencil on front free endpaper: 'For Mrs [Nelson?] to while away yr leisure hours.' One of only 1250 copies issued of the first American edition, published just as Richard Bentley was re-issuing Austen's work in the UK. Gilson B5. No further American edition was issued until 1838. Darrach's passionate letters to authors and friends about how books impacted her life and spirit have become part of the critical literature of the period. See… Read More

Description:
Philadelphia: Carey & Lea, 1832. First edition. Cloth. Good. 8" by 4.5". None. A scarce, first American edition of Jane Austen's final novel. In the publisher's original binding, and with the scarce adverts. Complete with the often missing publisher's catalogue to the rear of the first volume for Carey and Lea. These volumes are in the publisher's original binding, and held in a very bright custom slipcase. A scarce edition of Jane Austen's final novel. Persuasion was first published in England six months after Austen's death. It concerns Anne Elliot, the 27 year old protagonist whose family moves to lower their expenses. This novel is often regarded as Austen's most maturely written novel. Upon initial publication this work received moderate success, but its fame came later into the nineteenth century and continued onward to the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Gilson (B3) notes that 'relatively few copies of the 1832-1833 Philadelphia editions are known to survive'. Austen's novels… Read More
