Not dated but c. early 20th century. Square, tight and clean throughout with some very minor wear to edges and tips. Spines gently sunned. A very pleasing collectable set at a great price.

With the signature of George Weare Brakenridge (1775-1856), the noted English antiquarian, on the first fly of each volume. These are the first two volumes of the four volume set and contain Gay's poems, not his plays or fables (we particularly enjoyed the "To A Young Lady,With Some Lampreys". Gay was especially noted for the Beggar's Opera. In what appears to be full period leather, boards detached and rubbed at edges, spines have five raised bands, spine covers worn, red spine labels, label on Vol I partly chipped away. Interior have Brakenridge's signature on both first flies, end pages foxed, another contemporary signature on each title page, some light foxing throughout but otherwise clean and nice.
