Description:
London: Hutchinson & Co, 1963. First British Edition. Near Fine/Very Good+. First British edition. 223 pp. Black cloth with silver and red lettering on spine. Near Fine with tiny nick in spine in Very Good+ unclipped dust jacket, slightly worn at head and tail, closed tear in top of back panel, verso lightly foxed along folds and edges. Slight mustiness. Rare in both British and American editions. The African-American author and professor's best-known novel, also his debut. He coined the term "woke" in a 1962 op-ed. Nearly a year after his death in 2017 interest in his works began to revive with a piece in The New Yorker dubbing him "The Lost Giant of American Literature.

Doubleday & Company, inc., 1962. Hardcover. Good/Acceptable. 1962. 223 pages. Black and gold jacket in clear plastic sleeve, over beige and black cloth with black lettering to spine. Gutter code D38 to page 223 indicates year and month of manufacture. Possibly 1st edition, 2nd impression. Pages remain mostly clear and bright with minimal tanning and foxing throughout, light occasional marking. Heavier tanning to endpapers. Pencil inscription to front free endpaper. Liquid staining to top text block edge, pages unaffected. Binding remains firm. Boards are moderately marked and lightly stained and have light wear to edges, moderate bumping and light fraying to corners, crushing and fraying to spine. Top corner of front flap is clipped. Jacket is moderately marked and has heavy edge wear with creases, chips and tears, with some small areas of loss.

Signed by William Melvin Kelley on the front free endpaper with a lengthy, very personal inscription to Elizabeth Campbell, who was the second wife of photographer Gordon Parks, "6/14/62 For Liz:-- You must know, Skinny, that I'm pulling for you, that I wish you success in all things that you decide to do. All that you can wish or hope for is that the people you love get a little lucky, that they make the right guesses and choices. I'm sorry that's all I can give you. Love, [signed] Kelley." According to a relative of the author's this inscription was on the day of Campbell and Parks' wedding. Campbell and Kelley had grown up together, and her marrying Parks had come as a surprise.
