New York: The Viking Press, , 1936. Quarto. Original grey cloth-backed pink patterned paper boards, spine lettered in pink, bull illustration to covers in black, yellow pictorial endpapers. With the dust jacket. Housed in a pink quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Black and white illustrations throughout by Robert Lawson. Minor rubbing to extremities, partially erased ownership inscription to head of title page; a near-fine copy in the jacket with sunned spine, loss to colour at spine ends, slight fading to front panel, a couple of marks to covers, slight nicks to extremities. First edition, first printing. A classic children's tale of a bull who liked to smell flowers under the cork tree rather than fight in bull fights. • Book condition: Very Good
  • Quantity available: 1
New York: The Viking Press, 1936. Boards. Very Good. Munro Leaf. A wonderful copy of the 1936 true 1st edition, INSCRIBED IN YEAR-OF-PUBLICATION BY ROBERT LAWSON AND ALSO INSCRIBED BY MUNRO LEAF. FURTHERMORE, THIS COPY INCLUDES A WARM, HANDWRITTEN, FULL-PAGE LETTER FROM ROBERT LAWSON ON HIS PERSONAL STATIONARY (ADDRESSED TO THE SAME FAMILY THE BOOK IS INSCRIBED TO). A solid copy to boot of the September 1936 1st edition. Tight and VG in its famous decorative pink boards, with light offsetting along the front panel's top-edge and very light foxing to a handful of pages. Lacking the original dustjacket. One of the great highspots of 20th century children's literature and a career-defining achievement for both Lawson's tender narration and Leaf's incomparable illustrations.

  • Edition: 1st Edition
  • Book condition: Very Good
  • Quantity available: 1
Viking, 1936 An advance copy of the first edition, with "First Published September 1936 on the copyright page." The book is larger than the first edition, and has rough uncut pages. The cover also differs, with brown cloth and sections of the eventual first edition cover attached. This is obviously some sort of advance production copy, probably prepared by Viking Press for internal use. The only copy we have ever seen or heard of. It is in very good condition, with the book block lying loose in the covers. There is no evidence of glue, so the two were probably never attached. Housed in a custom-made collector's slipcase.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket.
