Large folio consisting of 5 ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPHS and the title and colophon pages. For her favorite poem, originally published in I SHALL NOT BE MOVED, Angelou chose the internationally acclaimed African-American printmaker John Biggers to illustrate a book published by the Limited Editions Club in an edition of only 400 numbered copies signed by both the author and the artist. Description:
Maya Angelou's Music, Deep Rivers in My Soul is a groundbreaking event for us, a first edition that she wrote especially for our members! She also inspire the exceptional artist, Dean Mitchell, to create six glorious etchings for the book.Even better, Maya Angelou inspired Wynton Marsalis to compose and perform with her a thirty minute CD with Dr. Angelou reading her poem. And, inspired by Dean Mitchell, the esteemed art critic of The New York Times, Michael Kimmelman, in the April 26, 2002 edition devoted nearly the entire front page of the Arts section to a glowing review."Mr. Mitchell's works are subtly tuned character studies with an eye toward abstract form and charismatic light. Mr. Mitchell is a virtual modern-day Vermeer of ordinary black people given dignity through the eloquence of his concentration and touch."From the art critic of New Orleans' Times-Picayune: "In the world of romantic realism, it doesn't get much better than this."Six colored etchings and Afterword by Dean Mitchell.CD of… Read More

Description:
Maya Angelou created this book for the Limited Editions Club: she wrote the poem, she selected the artist, the award-winning water colorist Dean Mitchell, and asked Wynton Marsalis to compose and then perform an original jazz composition just for this book (a CD copy is tucked into the solander box). Mitchell wrote an Afterword, relating his composition to the poetry.
The book was designed, typeset, and printed by Dan Carr and Julia Ferrari. Carol Joyce bound the book and the solander box in a matching tan fabric with morocco labels for the book and the spine of the box.
The book has six color etchings created by Mitchell and printed by Peter Pettengill. Marsalis and his sextet performed the work, with Angelou reciting her poem. Signed by Angelou, Mitchell, and Marsalis. As New. History LEC p. 239.
Please note: this book is very large and heavy. Extra charges will apply for the cost of shipping materials and postage above what is normal for a book. Thank you for your understanding!

Description:
New York: Random House, 1969. First edition with the topstain red of Angelou's critically acclaimed first book. Octavo, original cloth. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Janet Halverson. An exceptional example. "This testimony from a black sister marks the beginning of a new era in the minds and hearts of all black men and women... I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, liberates the reader into life simply because Maya Angelou confronts her own life with such a moving wonder, such a luminous dignity. I have no words for this achievement, but I know that not since the days of my childhood, when the people in books were more real than the people one saw every day, have I found myself so moved... Her portrait is a biblical study in life in the midst of death" (James Baldwin). Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 best non-fiction books of the twentieth century and by Time Magazine as one of the top 100 non-fiction books written in English since 1923.
