Description:
Harvard University Press, 1996. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. 410 pages. By the Australian geologist. A 'history from Antiquity to the present of ideas about the planet on which we live' -- from the front flap. First edition (first printing). A fine copy in a fine dust jacket. From the Harvard office library of the paleontologist and leading advocate for evolution, Stephen Jay Gould, whose work is cited on several pages, and with Gould's pencil notes on the rear endpapers and minor marginalia on at least one page. With a posthumous tipped in bookplate indicating the provenance. *** Intellectually, Gould understood the true nature of these bookplates, but the book collector in him appreciated them. In his essay 'A Seahorse for All Races' Gould writes about one of his prized possessions, a book from Charles Dickens' library: 'Dickens made no annotations, but a bookplate on the cover, presumably inserted as a come-on for a sale after Dickens' death in 1870, does prove that [he] kept and shelved the… Read More

Description:
Boston: D.L. Guernsey, Publisher, 1882. First Edition Thus. Almost anyone who encountered Lincoln in a significant way felt compelled sooner or later to tell about it, often less with a view to adding to the historical record than to caressing Lincoln's memory. As the supply and demand for reminiscences fed ecah other, they were sought out, collected, and published in large volumes. The first of these was The Lincoln Memorial: Album Immortelles, edited by Osborn Oldroyd in 1882. An Ohio-born veteran, Oldroyd may have been the first dedicated collector of Lincolniana; and about the time this book was published he moved into the old Lincoln homestead in Springfield and turned it into a museum of relics and memorabilia" (cf.Peterson, Merrill D. Lincoln In American Memory). In 1925, after many years of negotiation, Oldroyd sold his entire collection to the U.S. government for the sum of $50,000, preserving his lifelong obsession along with many artifacts which otherwise may have vanished. The volume was… Read More
