Description:
1974-1993. Best known for the Mary Poppins series of children's books, Australian-born British writer Pamela Lyndon Travers gained a reputation for her stubborn and reclusive nature. Travers insisted on acting as an adviser in Walt Disney's musical film adaptation of Mary Poppins and strongly disapproved of the final product, particularly the use of animation in the film. She received no invitation to the film's star-studded premiere and refused to allow any further adaptations of the series. The film Saving Mr. Banks was produced in 2013, offering a dramatized retelling of the working process during the planning of Mary Poppins starring Emma Thompson as P. L. Travers and Tom Hanks as Walt Disney.

Description:
New York: Reynal & Hitchcock , 1934. First US edition, first printing. Published by Reynal & Hitchcock in New York, 1934. This is a very good copy. The dust wrapper, profusely illustrated by the daughter of E.H. Shepard, Mary, is highly presentable. There are some mild creases to the edges and at the spine tips. It has not been price clipped, showing the original $1.50 net price - rear flap has been clipped. There is a small closed tear to the front panel, which has been internally repaired, as has a minor chip to the top of the rear panel. The spine is slightly toned. The boards, with the frontal motif of the title character, are so slightly bowed, though do not lean when standing. The corners are markedly sharp, though the front (top) right-hand is bumped. The spine tips are also slightly bumped, the tail notably so. The hinges are tight and intact. The front fly is slightly toned, as are further preliminaries. There is a small previous owner's inscription to the front endpaper. The… Read More

Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt/Disney Enterprises, Inc., 2018. First edition, early printing of the deluxe novelization of the 2018 American musical fantasy film starring Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers, illustrated with color photographs from the film. Signed by Angela Lansbury opposite the title page. Lansbury played played the role of the Balloon Lady, a kindly old woman who sells balloons at the park. The part was written to be a cameo role for Julie Andrews who portrayed Mary Poppins in the original film, but she turned the role down as she felt her presence would unfairly take attention away from Emily Blunt. In fine condition. Rare signed. Based on the book series Mary Poppins by P. L. Travers, Mary Poppins Returns debuted in 2018 as a live-action and traditionally animated sequel to the classic 1964 film Mary Poppins, starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. Description:
New York: Book of the Month Club, 2000. Hardcover. New/New. Mary Shephard. A nice set of the first four "Mary Poppins" books P.L. Travers wrote, between 1934 and 1952. These were re-published by the Book of the Month Club in 2000 as reproductions of the original editions, complete with the illustrations by Mary Shepherd, who did the pen-and-ink illustrations for all eight of the original books. (And when we say these are "reproductions," that means the first book includes the "Bad Tuesday" chapter as it was originally published. In that chapter, Mary Poppins produces a magical compass that takes the children to the four corners of the earth, where they meet people from representative cultures. But for Travers, "representative" meant stereotypes that produced controversy even when the book was published in 1934! She rewrote the chapter twice over the years to respond to criticism, and Shepherd changed her pictures, but be aware that this edition contains the original versions of both words and… Read More
