Description:
Paris: Floury, 1899. First edition, number 84 of 100 copies only, one of the most celebrated and sought-after of all livres d'artiste, some of Lautrec's finest illustration and the prototype of nearly all modern bestiairies (Garvey). Lautrec and Jules Renard met first in 1894. The artist asked to illustrate some of the charming and witty portraits of animals and his first sketches were made at the Jardin d'Acclimatation and Jardin des Plantes in 1896. The last two illustrations printed were executed by Lautrec while he was a patient at the Neuilly clinic of Dr Sémalaigne. Though now considered one of the greatest of all livres d'artiste, Histoires naturelles was poorly received on first publication.Renard's Histoire naturelles "contains some of Toulouse Lautrec's most refined draftsmanship and, with Yvette Guilbert, it is considered one of the masterpieces of the illustrated book. It was Lautrec who requested the pleasure of illustrating Renard's bestiary, and Renard agreed, hoping for descriptions… Read More

The complete set of the 13 original lithographs by Toulouse-Lautrec on beige wove paper from the edition printed for 'Les XX' in 1913. The artistes represented are the following: 1. Sarah Bernhardt   2. Jeanne Granier 3. Anna Held 4. May Belfort 5. Émilienne d’Alençon 6. Coquelin Aine 7. Jane Hading 8. Louise Balthy. 9. Description:
Paris: Édouard Kleinmann, 1893. First Edition. fine. Toulouse-Lautrec. 1st printing, 1st issue, Wittrock 11, the rare state A, of 3 (A, B, and C). This state A precedes the edition of 100 and is geometrically more limited. A fine lithograph on laid Japan paper, with full margins (9 5/8" X 15 1/2"). Signed by the artist with his monogram in black pencil, and it is anomalous to find his lithographs of this type signed by hand, as what is usually seen are his initials applied in the plate or with a stamp. The ownership chain tells a fully comforting tale. Ex-Roger Marx, his tiny indicator in the corner, and his pencil note, in French, along the bottom edge. Ex-The Museum of Modern Art, New York, from their own collection, and sold to subsidize their Acquisitions Fund, an impeccable provenance for the certainty of the lithograph, but even more importantly, for the certainty of the pencil signature. Framed. There is a painting, on cardboard, of the same young woman, in the same pose, at The Musee… Read More

Original lithograph by Toulouse-Lautrec for a double-bill at the Théâtre de l'Oeuvre, including Oscar Wilde's Salomé.A fine monochrome lithograph with portraits of the authors of the plays making upadouble-bill. Romain Coolus, author of the 3-Act play Raphaël, on the left, with a short moustache and pointed beard, carrying a cane under his arm and wearing a top hat and coat with the collar turned up, looks the dappergentleman, but with an impish smile; there is the suggestion of the Arche de Triomphe in the background behind him.
