Description:
La Revue Blanche Complete collection of 237 issues of the Parisian series of the French literary and artistic magazine (October 1891 April 15, 1903). The magazines are guarded in 30 clam-shell boxes in beige cloth, each with title, number, and years of the magazines included. One volume in large format collects the lithographic plates out of text of the magazines, including 18 original lithographs by Bonnard, Toulouse-Lautrec, Redon, Vuillard, Denis, and others. La Revue Blanche was initially founded in Liège in December 1889 by the Natanson brothers and Félix Fénéon, and then moved to Paris in October 1891. Leading voice of the cultural and artistic intelligentsia of the time, the review brought together all the names of the artists and writers of the end of the century: Apollinaire, Zola, Octave Mirbeau, that in 1900 contributed serially with Le Journal d'une femme de chambre, Pierre Louÿs, Mallarmé, Paul Claudel, Claude Debussy, André Gide, and many more. Paris., 1893 – 1894.. Later burgundy cloth-backed marbled paper boards, original publisher's printed illustrated wrappers preserved.. 11 issues. Folio. (396 x 294 mm).. Each issue with title and cover illustration, printed text in French throughout and advertisements to rear cover and with 33 illustrations by Toulouse-Lautrec, Bonnard, Ibels, Willette, Vallotton, Hermann-Paul and others. An excellent, complete set of the very scarce fin-de-siècle illustrated revue 'L'Escarmouche' with additional important ephemera and original material. Directed by Georges Darien, the writer, satirist and artist, the anarchist 'L'Escarmouche' was short-lived even by the standards of the day, appearing weekly for only three short months from November 1893 to January 1894 (a very rare final number, included here, was issued as an afterthought and without illustration apart from the cover by Ibels, in March 1894). Noted rather more for its illustration than any literary merit, 'LEscarmouche' featured covers by… Read More

Paris: Chaix. Very Good. ONE OF TOULOUSE-LAUTREC'S MOST FAMOUS LITHOGRAPHS. "This famous poster advertising Le Jardin de Paris shows the high-kicking performance of the dynamic Jane Avril in the quadrille naturaliste, framed by the staff of the orchestra's bass fiddle. Vaucaire described the dance in the August 1, 1886, Paris Illustré as 'that wonderful, insolent joke in which two women advanced side by side, each balancing on one foot while keeping the other at the level of the spectators' eyes. They wore silk stockings and cambric and lace drawers, with much swishing of pretty petticoats'" (Donson and Griepp, Great Lithographs by Toulouse-Lautrec). From the Les Maitres de L'Affiche (Masters of the Poster) series, plate 110. "The Masters of the Poster, first published in Paris from 1895 to 1900, is the most famous compilation ever made of the art of the great age of the poster-an art whose new graphic sophistication captured the ebullience of Paris… Read More
