Description:
London: Sampson Low, Marston, Low & Searle, 1874. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fair. Ex-public library. Red cloth boards with plain endpapers. [iv] + 343pp + 43 [out of 44]pp catalogue. The binding is tight but between-section cracking has forced it out of square. There are the unsightly remains of a large yellow library label at the top of the upper board. The corners and edges are very rubbed. The boards and spine have been imperfectly repaired. The leaf bearing pp. 31/2 has been bound in, presumably at a later date, between pp. 80 and 81 and has a chip with small loss at the outer edge. The spine cover is faded and the gilt lettering barely legible. The front endpaper is clean and has no ownership markings but there are identical library numbers inked to both faces. The last catalogue leaf (p. 44) is affixed to the rear pastedown. The title page has a library stamp and handwritten and stamped numbers. There are no other markings but for small brown stains (not foxing) on many of the pages. This… Read More

Description:
London: Smith, Elder and Co., 1867. 2 volumes. First edition and first printing other then when serialized in Cornhill Magazine. Illustrated with sixteen wood-engraved plates after M. Ellen Edwards, two of which are frontispieces. Tall 8vos, in the publisher's original handsome Victorian decorated cloth, this is scarcer of the two variants noted by Sadleir, with the decoration in gilt and black as opposed to gilt and blind. Sadleir notes, "I do not know which style is earlier, but would, on general principles, incline to favour that with the additional black-blocking..." The volumes are gilt and black decorated and elaborately lettered on the upper covers and spines in a stylized arabesque motif, the rear covers decorated in blind only, both volumes with original brown endpapers. The volumes now housed in two matching slipcases, each with a morocco labeled chemise gilt lettered. [ii], 313, [2 ads]; [ii], 309, [2 ads] pp. An exceptional set, very beautifully preserved, the paper fresh and… Read More

Description:
London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, & Roberts, 1857. Jean Hersholt's copy, in the original cloth First edition, a very nice copy in the publisher's cloth, of a novel often found rebound or heavily restored.Sadleir comments on the novel's rarity in cloth: "Barchester Towers had the same printing number and publisher as The Warden. But it was a three-volume books, sold at 31. 6d., and reached a public larger than that of the coteries. In consequence it was more frequently borrowed from the libraries and less frequently bought outright; also it was more thoroughly and destructively read."This set is in Sadleir's first binding with the following publisher's advertisements printed on brick-red endpapers: Vol. 1 with Mrs Jameson's Works and T. H. Horne's Introduction to Holy Scriptures (variant of Sadleir's variety A which calls for these ads in vol. 2); vol. 2 with Maunder's Geographical Treasury and the New Edition of Conybeare and Hawson's "St. Paul" (Sadleir's Variety C); vol. 3 same as vol. 1… Read More

London: Chapman & Hall, 1859. 3 volumes. First edition. 8vo, original publisher's brown cloth, the boards decorated in blind, the spines sometime very expertly rebacked but retaining the original blind-decorated and gilt lettered spine panels. Now housed in a very handsome custom clamshell box of marbled paper backed in dark brown morocco gilt lettered and banded. iv, 335; iv, 344; iv, 331pp. A very handsome set, the cloth especially well preserved with the restoration done being extremely discreet and unobtrusive, the text much nicer than is typically found, the paper clean and fresh with any spotting being only very occasion and extremely minor, everything tight and sound, a superior copy to set to any other we are aware of currently in commerce. A VERY SCARCE TROLLOPE FIRST EDITION, AND QUITE RARE INDEED. IN THE ORIGINAL CLOTH. Description:
London: Chapman & Hall, 1858. A superb set in original cloth Second edition, one of 250 copies only. This second edition, published within three weeks of the first and put in the same binding, is more akin to a second impression. The rights for this book were first offered to Bentley, who, "having hesitated, lost his chance of securing the novel which was sold to Chapman & Hall by the author himself... Chapman & Hall were rising publishers with an ambitious fiction list" (Sadleir), but their lack of experience pushed them to err on the side of caution and they under-printed Doctor Thorne, producing "fewer copies than were originally produced either of Barchester Towers or of The Three Clerks"(ibid.), making the 1858 editions rarer than either titles. 3 volumes, octavo. Original embossed grey-purple grain cloth, titles in gilt to spines. Neat ink ownership to front pastedowns "C. Palmer, given by Arthur, June 1859". Spines slightly sunned, a little rubbed, a touch of wear to corners, internally… Read More

London: Chapman & Hall, 1860. PRESENTATION COPY FOURTH EDITION. 1 vol., inscribed on title-page "Herbert Watkins from Anthony Trollope", with the hand tinted frontis fold out map. Bound in the publisher's original gilt stamped maroon cloth, gilt lettered spine, inner and outer hinges fine, head and foot of spine slightly rubbed, remnants of tape glue? to hinges even though both hinges are in good condition, overall a VERY GOOD copy.\r\nHerbert Watkins (b.1850) was a British photographer active in London in second part of 19th century. His London studio was located at 215 Regent Street. There exists a popular studio photo of Trollope take by Herbert. In a letter to Herbert dated April 13,1860 Trollpe writes "I think the portrait now as it stands will do very well. It looks un-common feirce (sic), as that of a dog about to bite; but that I fear is the nature of the animal portrayed".

Description:
Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, [1879]. First edition, second issue, of one of Trollope's scarcest works, his story of a woman's struggles to marry while caught between the mutually antagonistic Jewish and gentile societies of Prague. Written by Trollope as a short story for anonymous serialisation in Blackwood's Magazine, it turned out longer than intended, but as a book it was not successful. First published in 1867, the first issue copies were bound into two volumes with a dated title page. In 1879 the remainder sheets were bound up two volumes in one, with (unusually) an undated title page specially printed for this issue. Sadleir states that there were fewer than 200 bound up for the extremely rare first issue, and not many more for the second. Two volumes in one, octavo. Original brown cloth, titles gilt to spine, covers blind-stamped with a geometric panel and central lozenge. Spine darkened, rubbed and rolled, cloth split along rear joint though the board holding fine,… Read More

Housed in a custom slipcase with marbled inner papers. Sadleir 16-17. Trollope Society, "The Warden". The publisher's catalog is dated September of 1854. Extraordinarily difficult to find in exceptional condition. The first of the Barset novels to be published, Trollope's Warden deals with zealous reformers pitted against the traditions of the Anglican Clergy. Trollope's favorite motifs of morality and tradition pitted against selfishness are explored, in a quiet, subtle Victorian setting. A bookplate on the front pastedown.
