Description:
London: Published by Leonard and Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press, 1925 First edition, first printing. One of 2000 copies. Publisher's deep rust cloth, gilt lettering to spine; in its original cream-colored dust jacket, printed in black and white, and designed by Vanessa Bell. Fine book, with just some light offsetting to endpapers, and novelist Dennis Wheatley's bookplate to front pastedown; fine unclipped dust jacket, with a few small closed tears to panel edges, very shallow chipping to spine ends, light toning and a touch of staining to spine, panels remarkably bright and clean with just a hint of soiling to rear panel, and a tiny chip to front flap fold. Overall, an exemplary copy of arguably Virginia Woolf's greatest novel. Housed in a custom quarter leather box with folding chemise. Kirkpatrick A9a. Woolmer 82. One of the author's best-known novels, Mrs. Dalloway tells the story of Clarissa Dalloway as she prepares to host a high-society party. The text is a…

Description:
London: The Hogarth Press, 1927. First edition, first printing. Published by The Hogarth Press in London, 1927. This is a very good (or better) copy. The dust wrapper appears in beautiful condition, though has some light restorative repair to the spine, mainly internally. There is a thin amount of chipping to the tail of the spine and a larger chip to the head. The blue lettering on the spine is bright and vibrant, however. There is slight loss at the corners and some light handling marks throughout. The boards are slightly sunned at the spine and there are some light blemishes to both panels. The corners are sharp. The internals are incredibly clean and fresh. There is a review slip loosely slipped inside, on footed 'The Hogarth Press' paper, outlining the date of publication (May 7th) and the price (7/6) in what may be Leonard Woolf's own hand, though this is down for debate. Overall, this is a very good (or better) copy of what is a scarce work, increasingly scarce with the review slip…

(500 copies printed). 8vo. 16 pp. With two engravings by Vanessa Bell, in the original decorated wrappers, which have had some excellent edge restoration. White printed label to upper wrapper. Not in fact printed at, but for, the Hogarth Press by Richard Madley of Whitfield Street, possibly in consequence of Vanessa Bell's disappointment at the first edition's rendering of her interior art, which had, at 150 copies, been well enough subscribed to put forth a second. A lovely example. "Leonard Woolf thought that these wrappers were not from the Omega Workshops but were copied from the first edition by someone else". Kirkpatrick and Clarke A3b. Woolmer 7.

Crown 8vo. 469 pp. Publisher's light jade-green cloth, gilt titles to the spine. A lovely near fine or better copy in a superb example of the illustrated original cream dustwrapper designed by Vanessa Bell and printed in black and brown. Quite stunning edition. Kirkpatrick and Clarke A22a. Wolmer 423. The author's penultimate novel, bringing together all of her classic themes. The success of The Years, (now recognized as a feminist novel rather than simply a family saga), motivated Time Magazine to devote a 1937 cover to Virginia Woolf. A signed copy of The Years is rare to find.

Description:
London: The Hogarth Press,, 1925. A lovely copy in the scarce dust jacket First edition, first impression, first issue binding, in an unusually nice copy of the jacket; this is one of Woolf's scarcest books to find in dust jacket, and seldom in such nice condition. It is the first of the two volumes of Woolf's Common Reader, each series being a discrete work in its own right; the second was published in 1932. The Common Reader series comprise critical essays, articles, and book reviews that had previously appeared in various publications. "Woolf was trying to bring imagination and cohesion to a disparate collection, unified only by her approach and personality... The Times itself saw Woolf as 'a novelist deliberately using her creative imagination' and praised her for 'conduct[ing] us not into the classroom but out of it'" (Clarke, introduction). Octavo. Original grey cloth-backed pictorial boards, designed by Vanessa Bell, spine lettered in black. With dust jacket. Bottom edge slightly bumped with…

The portfolio is comprised of Freund's portraits of: 1. Colette (1873-1954) 2. Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) 3. André Gide (1869-1951) 4. James Joyce (1882-1941) 5. Andreinne Monnier (1892-1955) 6. Victoria Sackville-West (1892-1962) It is well documented both Woolf's and Joyce's aversions to sitting for photographs, and indeed "Freund was twice refused admission to Tavistock Square but eventually Woolf succumbed", being "acutely self-conscious and disliked sitting for pictures, never mind…

Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 1932, 8vo., 172pp. Publisher's original blue boards, titles to spine gilt. A near fine fresh copy [neat contemporary name on the ffe.] in the blue printed dustwrapper of the First Canadian Edition, first printing. The most elusive of the First Editions having been printed in the US [possibly from Harcourt Brace supplied sheets] in an unknown but very small edition, [250 - 500 copies, a speculation]. A very nice example for the completist, the DJ has one repaired closed tear but is otherwise very bright & interesting in its yellowish tonal quality.
