Wells in volume one, and additionally inscribed by Wells in volume one to his lover Elizabeth von Arnim, "To Little e H.G." With her bookplate to all but two volumes. After her first husband's death, she had a three-year affair with the writer H. G. Wells, then later married Frank Russell, elder brother of the Nobel prize-winning writer and philosopher Bertrand Russell. She was a cousin of the New Zealand-born writer Katherine Mansfield. Her first marriage made her Countess von Arnim-Schlagenthin and her second Elizabeth Russell, Countess Russell. Though known in early life as May, publication of her first book introduced her to readers as Elizabeth, which she eventually became to her friends and finally even to her family. She is now known invariably as Elizabeth von Arnim. She used the pen name Alice Cholmondeley only for the novel… Read More

Description:
London: Heinemann. London, Heinemann, 1898. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A near fine copy. A cornerstone of modern speculative fiction collecting, and literature in general. First issue (Currey's issue B [Currey p426]), 32p ads dated. Number 39 on the NPR greatest SF list. In the Locus list for best SF of all time there are only four novels listed prior to WWII, including Star Maker, The Time Machine, Frankenstein and War of the Worlds, which whilst it's easy to think of others that should be included it's hard to argue that those four shouldn't. A classic. A lovely copy, spien just a touch rubbed and marginally toned. Tips a little bumped. Overall, a superior copy. A little toning to the endpapers. [9073, Hyraxia Books]. . Near Fine. Hardback. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1898.
