Toronto, New York, London: D. Van Nostrand Company, Inc, 1950. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good. First Edition. [2], [2 - frontispiece], [iii]-xxiii, [1 blank], [1]-558 pages, followed by blank leaf and appendix B which was printed on both sides of the rear flyleaf plus the rear pastedown (3 pages total). 8vo. The first printing, [November] 1950. Previous owner name ("Fues, 1951") on front flyleaf. Small tasteful library ticket "Burndy Library, Gift of Bern Dibner" with withdrawn stamp tipped onto the front pastedown. Pages edges dusted. This copy has almost none of the spine darkening that plagues this particular book (scarce thus). Lacks the dust jacket as is often the case with this book which was used by a generation of engineers as a standard reference. Cloth. An important book by Shockley who, with Bardeen and Brattain, co-invented the transistor and were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1956 ''for their researches on semiconductors and their discovery of the transistor effect''. Bern…

Description:
New York: D. Van Nostrand Company, Inc, 1950. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good +. First printing, octavo size, 587 pp., association copy owned by Charles Kittel. William Bradford Shockley, Jr. (1910-1989) managed the research group at Bell Labs and was one of three scientists (along with John Bardeen and Walter Brattain) who were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in 1956 in Physics for "their researches on semiconductors and their discovery of the transistor effect" (n.b., quote from Wiki). This discovery, and the commercialization of such, directly led to the birth of Silicon Valley. This copy is not only the first printing of this seminal work, but has written, on the front free endpaper, "C. Kittel" with the date of 1951 (the year directly following publication). It seems more than highly likely that our C. Kittel is the physicist Charles Kittel who also worked at Bell Labs from 1947 to 1951, and apparently worked quite closely with Shockley. There is an extensive oral history…

Description:
New York: D. Van Nostrand Company, Inc., 1950. Presentation copy to Thornton Read First edition, first printing. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To Thornton Read: As an introduction to germanium research. Bill Shockley. Dec '50". The recipient Thornton Read was an American physicist who with Charles Frank formulated what came to be known as the Frank-Read mechanism for generating dislocations in a crystal. Shockley had worked with Read on crystal formation during a sabbatical from his research on semiconductors; Read studied germanium in his work on crystallization, hence the inscription. Electrons and Holes in Semiconductors was the most influential work of the Nobel Laureate William Shockley, frequently reprinted and becoming a standard text book on the subject. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt on black ground. Spine sunned and lightly frayed at ends, small mark to rear cover. A very good copy.
