Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Whitney and Legare I hope you enjoy it. Bill Steig." Additionally signed in full by William Steig above the inscription. In near fine condition. "Sure to enchant any child lucky enough to read it... such an ingratiating, cheery book that no one will be able to resist it" (Washington Post). Steig's comic quest tale inspired Dreamworks Studios' phenomenally successful franchise; the first film, released in 2001, received the inaugural Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
