Description:
New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1940. First Edition. An attractive copy of Wright's first novel, which catapulted him to national fame. "The book is a shattering portrait of Bigger Thomas, the protagonist, who is a product of racism and oppression. The novel takes its readers through treacherous corridors of violence and retribution as it reflects much of the unrest in the American racial system" (Blockson 76). A cornerstone of 20th century African American literature, seldom encountered in superior condition. Blockson 5938; Hanna 3906. First Printing. Octavo (21cm); first binding in navy blue cloth, with titles stamped in red and pale blue on spine and front cover; dustjacket; xii,359,[1]pp. Touch of dust-soil to upper edge of textblock, hint of offsetting to endpapers, else a fresh, very Near Fine copy. In the first state dustjacket, without single-spaced blurbs on spine and front panel; unclipped (priced $2.50), gently spine-sunned and lightly edgeworn, with some minor dust-soil (chiefly… Read More

8vo. New York & London: Harper and Brothers Publisher's, 1940. 8vo, xi, 359 pp. Ttitle-page printed in red and black. Original dark blue cloth with lettering in red, price-clipped jacket with moderate wear and chipping and some old tape repairs, protected by mylar. § First edition, first printing with publisher's A-P code on the copyright page; first state dust-jacket with no blurb on the spine. A milestone in 20th century literature. As Irving Howe wrote in his 1963 essay "Black Boys and Native Sons": "The day Native Son appeared, American culture was changed forever. No matter how much qualifying the book might later need, it made impossible a repetition of the old lies ... [and] brought out into the open, as no one ever had before, the hatred, fear, and violence that have crippled and may yet destroy our culture." Over 250,000 copies were sold in the first few weeks; the first issue (as here) is very scarce in any condition. Blockson 76: "Native Son ranks with such American novels as An American… Read More

Description:
New York: Harper and Brothers Publishers. 1940. First edition, first printing. First edition, first printing. Publisher's original navy blue cloth with titles blocked in grey and red to the upper board and spine, in dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a little rubbing and bumping to the extremities. The contents, with a few foxing spots to the edge of the front and rear endpaper are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the rubbed and nicked first printing dustwrapper that has several short closed tears with associated creasing, a chip to the upper edge of the rear panel where is meets the spine, and another, smaller, to the top edge of the front panel. The colour remains uniformly bright and without the fading of the spine so often encountered. Not price-clipped ($2.50 to the upper front flap). Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.
