London: Cassell & Company, Limited,, 1890. One of the most significant optical devices of the Victorian era Octavo. Striking original black cloth-backed pictorial boards. Folding diagrammatic frontispiece, diagram to the text. A little rubbed and soiled, the spine a touch sunned and cockled, pale toning, but overall very good. First and only contemporary edition, inscribed by the author on the title, "Mr. John Bailey, July 25 1893, With the Author's kind regards, J. H. Pepper". The work gives his exposition of the famous stage illusion that came to be known as "Pepper's Ghost", in which a spectral image of an actor was projected before the audience. Pepper (1821-1900) was born in Great Queen Street in Westminster and educated at King's College School, becoming a pupil of the chemist John Thomas Cooper. In 1847 he gave his first lecture at the Royal Polytechnic Institution, which had been founded in 1838 as a place "where the Public, at little expense, may acquire practical knowledge of the various… Read more

Description:
Hanoviae: apud Guilielmum Antonium, 1593. This popular book attempts to divine humane personality traits on the basis of physical comparisons to animals. The ancient science of character-reading from physiognomy saw its Renaissance revival in della Porta widely influential book - one of the first such manuals to be illustrated -, which itself was the ultimate foundation of Lavater's revival of the idea in the late 18th century. Ref. Adams P-1925; NLM Durling 3722; Wellcome I, 5197. In-8°, 534 pp + [57] pp index. Marque de l'imprimeur sur la page de titre, portrait de l'auteur au verso de la page de titre, orné de c. 84 gravures sur bois dans le texte, parfois reprises. Description:
[16], 552 pp.Second edition of Porta's work on the doctrine of signatures and it is sometimes held that he was the real originator of this doctrine. Giambattista della Porta (1535-1615) believed that the external form of man indicates his internal qualities. Expanding this theory to plants, he maintained that the external form of plants reveals their internal healing powers. The plants that resemble particular parts of the body should be considered as suitable medication for illnesses in those particular body parts. "The back view of a human head with a thick crop of hair is introduced into the block with the Maidenhair Fern, which is an ancient specific for baldness; a Pomegranate with its seeds exposed, and a plant of "Toothwort," with its hard, white scale-leaves, are represented in the same figure as a set of human teeth" (Arber, p. 209). Porta also discusses the resemblance of plants and animal parts. A study of the character of the animal would provide clues to the medical qualities of the… Read more

La Haye; Paris: I. van Cleef (La Haye), A. A. Renouard (Paris), 1803. Later edition. Hardcover. poor to vg. Folio (14 1/4 x 12 1/4"). [4], 92pp. Contemporary quarter calf over marbled paper covered boards. Illustrated with 55 in-text illustrations and a cul-de-lampe being a portrait of the author, this work is an early French edition of Lavater's work on physiognomy. Originally published in four volumes between 1775 and 1778 under the title "Physiognomische Fragmente zur Beförderung der Menschenkenntnis und Menschenliebe," this work is Johann Kaspar Lavater's masterpiece. In it, the author introduces the idea that physiognomy relate to the specific character traits of individuals, rather than general types. The success of this book, which was extremely popular in France and England as well as Germany, rests largely upon the handsome style of publication and the accompanying illustrations. The two principal sources from which Lavater developed his physiognomical studies were the writings of the… Read more

Venice: Giarlamo Ruscelli. unbound. very good. Map. Uncolored copper engraving. 8.5" x 11.5". Shows some light toning at bottom margin. In very good condition. An early map of Sardinia and Sicily with text on verso. Girolamo Ruscelli (c. 1504-1566) was a Venetian editor, cartographer and physician known best for his revised publication of Ptolemy's "Geographia". Published posthumously, Ruscelli added about 37 new maps to his edition, largely based on the work of Gastaldi's 1548 expansion. Ruscelli is also believed to be associated with Alessio Piemontese, who many believe was in fact a pseudonym for Ruscelli. Piemontese wrote the popular book 'The Secrets of Alexis of Piedmont'. Alessio became known as the 'professor of secrets' who had dedicated his life to the hunt natural and technological secrets. Ruscelli, as Alessio, founded the 'Academy of Secrets' along with other humanists and noblemen, which became the first known experimental… Read more
