Description:
Nuremberg: Johann Petri, 1535. First edition. THE FIRST COMPREHENSIVE EUROPEAN TREATISE ON OPTICS. First edition, rare, a copy with numerous early annotations, of the first comprehensive European treatise on optics, and the first work to contain descriptions of medieval laboratory instruments. Witelo (born ca. AD 1230) begins with the geometrical theorems required for the optical demonstrations of the remaining books. He details the essential features of optical systems, including the theory of the nature of light and its propagation, reflection by plain and curved mirrors, light, colour, perspective, the rainbow, etc. Witelo's principal source was the Optics of Ibn al-Haytham; the present text, Witelo's Perspectiva, is thus the first printed source for Ibn al-Haytham's work, which was not published until 1572 (when it accompanied a reprint of Witelo's text). "The most outstanding feature of Witelo's method was his combination of manual and technical skill with mathematics for quantitative… Read More

London: Cassell & Company, Limited, 1890. One of the most significant optical devices of the Victorian era First and only contemporary edition, inscribed by the author on the title, "Mr. John Bailey, July 25 1893, With the Author's kind regards, J. In 1847 he gave his first lecture at the Royal Polytechnic Institution, which had been founded in 1838 as a place "where the Public, at little expense, may acquire practical knowledge of the various arts and branches of science connected with manufacturers, mining operations and rural economy". In 1848 a theatre was added to the Polytechnic to accommodate Pepper's brilliant lectures and displays of optical effects, which… Read More

Ref. Adams P-1925; NLM Durling 3722; Wellcome I, 5197. In-8°, 534 pp + [57] pp index. Marque de l'imprimeur sur la page de titre, portrait de l'auteur au verso de la page de titre, orné de c. 84 gravures sur bois dans le texte, parfois reprises. HISTORY OF INVENTIONS | GALILEO'S SIDEREUS NUNCIUS EXCERPTED ¶ [16], 144, 155-354, 335-342 p. | 8vo | )(^8 A-Y^8 ¶ 161 x 95 mm First edition of the philosopher's probing history of human ingenuity, organized chiefly by the fields of philosophy, medicine, science (physicus), mathematics, and technology (mechanicus). A second edition followed in 1700. Opening with an account of ancient inventions, the work is sweeping in breadth. "The first mortals," for example, "by thinking through purposeful work, gave succor to the necessity of life first, for which man introduced agriculture and shepherding" (p. 4). But he more deeply investigates innovations of his own age. He credits Francis Bacon with ushering in the present enlightened era of science (p. 7), followed by a complimentary twenty-page chapter on Descartes. ¶ From here, the author works through all of history. He begins with Socrates (inventor of philosophy) and Pythagoras (inventor of music). He discusses the juridical… Read More

Description:
ARGENTORATI: IMPENSIS LAZARI ZETZNERI BIBLIOPOLAE, 1606. Read More

La Haye; Paris: I. van Cleef (La Haye), A. A. Renouard (Paris), 1803. Later edition. Hardcover. poor to vg. Folio (14 1/4 x 12 1/4"). [4], 92pp. Contemporary quarter calf over marbled paper covered boards. Illustrated with 55 in-text illustrations and a cul-de-lampe being a portrait of the author, this work is an early French edition of Lavater's work on physiognomy. Originally published in four volumes between 1775 and 1778 under the title "Physiognomische Fragmente zur Beförderung der Menschenkenntnis und Menschenliebe," this work is Johann Kaspar Lavater's masterpiece. In it, the author introduces the idea that physiognomy relate to the specific character traits of individuals, rather than general types. The success of this book, which was extremely popular in France and England as well as Germany, rests largely upon the handsome style of publication and the accompanying illustrations.
