Description:
London: University of London Press, 1950. SIGNED FIRST EDITION, thus. Octavo, pp.160. Publisher's softcovers. SIGNED BY JOHN LENNON. An interesting school text-book borrowed by Lennon whilst a student at Quarry Bank School, Liverpool. Lennon has signed the lending stamp to the inside cover 'J[ohn] W[inston] Lennon, IVC', and dated this '1955'. The details have been crossed through by the subsequent reader in 1961-2. This signed library book represents an especially early autograph from the future Beatle, at this time aged just 14; 'The Quarrymen' band was formed by John aged 15 and was named after the high school noted within this volume. Music aside, the subject of the book has a clear link to his later career as a dramatist; Lennon co-wrote the play 'A Spaniard In the Works' with Victor Spinetti and starred in the film 'How I Won the War'. An important item, accompanied by a statement of provenance from Paul Wane one of the world's most respected Beatles specialists. Heavy rubbing, especially to… Read more

London: New English Library,, 1972. Quarto. Original green wrappers, titles to front cover in black. With the dust jacket. Many full page illustrations throughout. Book near fine, over-sized dust jacket lightly creased to edges. Proof of first edition, first impression. Publisher's stamp to the verso of the dust jacket states "Publication date 20 Apr 1972". This book was never published on that day or any subsequent day. The Emory University library, Atlanta, have a copy without the dust jacket and their website states "what we have is one of ca. 60 proof copies of a work that was never actually published. Why it was never published is not known for sure... it is possible that Lennon put a stop to it as he felt that the release of such a work would jeopardize his US green card application and did not give his permission for the final publication". In 1972, Lennon and Yoko Ono had been living in New York for a year, and they wanted to stay. But it happened also to be the year President Nixon was… Read more

Description:
London: New English Library. 1972. Uncorrected Proof Copy of this unpublished book. Original green printed card covers, in the dustwrapper. Housed in a purpose made quarter black morocco solander case. An excellent fine copy, without inscriptions or stamps. Illustrated throughout. Complete with the near fine lightly creased dustwrapper with the publisher's stamp reading 'Publication 20 APR 1972' to the underside. The dustwrapper illustration is by Tony Lamb, the image repeated without colour as an illustration in the book. The book, had it made publication, would almost certainly have been issued with a laminated hardcover or as a paperback original so the dustwrapper seen here is most likely the proof artwork for the upper and lower covers (a theory further supported by the very thin and completely blank flaps). Loosely laid in is the publisher's slip with the signature in red ink of Mark Howell, underneath which Peter Haining has signed and inscribed, 'The compiler of this… Read more

Description:
Beverly Hills, CA: Petersham Pictures / United Artists, 1966. Draft British script for the 1967 film. Based on the 1963 novel by Patrick Ryan. Copy likely belonging to John Lennon, with lines for his character Gripweed circled or stricken exclusively in holograph ink throughout. Also included is a separate call sheet for Monday, October 24, 1966, mentioning Lennon and his character specifically. "How I Won the War" follows a small company of British infantry in North Africa during World War II, with a heaping spoonful of stylized cinematography, fourth wall breaking, newsreel footage, and slapstick, absurdist humor. One of the first anti-war films of the late 1960s that reflected the souring public opinion of the Vietnam War, and arguably director Richard Lester's first "serious" film. John Lennon's circular-rim glasses, which, while originally a prop for the film, would be the signature frames he would wear for the rest of his life. He spent every day of production on set, even when not required… Read more

Description:
1965.. London: Jonathan Cape, 1965. 8vo. Original illustrated paper-covered boards; pp. 96; very good. Provenance: from the library of Victor Spinetti, signed by John Lennon to ffep, with Spinetti's initials in ink to last page. First Edition. Lennon's second book of nonsense poems, whimsical stories and surreal cartoons, preceeded by In His Own Write (1964). Filled with various puns and dark humour, as well as subtle socio-political criticism. The actor Victor Spinetti has the distinction of being the only non-Beatle to appear in all three Beatles films. George Harrison apparently once told him "You've got to be in all our films. If you're not in them me mum won't come and see them – because she fancies you." He was particularly close with Lennon, co-writing with him the stage adaptation of In His Own Write, the Beatle's first book, which played at the Old Vic in 1968. As one Sunday Times article put it: "It is fascinating of course to climb inside a Beatle's head to see… Read more

Description:
UK: Cape, 1965. 1st Edition 1965. A lovely example of Lennon's second book with his autograph/signed name to the endpaper. Very rare book to be signed and un-dedicated. John Lennon's autograph at the height of Beatle mania was very difficult to obtain. His previous book 'In His Own Write' had a signing session at Foyles in 1964 so the book appears more regular albeit as a reprint. He did not undertake any such commercial signing sessions for this book so they very rarely appear on the open market. Excellent provenance will be made available when purchased. Book is near fine and in lovely square tight condition. Nice sharp corners. A few very light foxing spots to odd pages. Pages very nice and clean. Never issued with a wrapper. A cracking example. More images can be taken upon request. Ref 9312. Signed by Author. First Edition. Original Board. Near Fine. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Description:
New York: Jonas Mekas, 1969. Vintage large format poster for the 1969 experimental film by shot and edited by Jonas Mekas from his "film diary" footage shot between 1965 and 1969. Either unique or very nearly so, with no examples found in OCLC or institutions worldwide. The poster also doubles as liner notes for the film, briefly describing the scenes, and annotating them with the music cues and time stamps, for each of the six reels so that the viewer could engage with the nearly three hour work "according to the time available to him, according to his preference, or any other good reason". The introduction goes on to explain that after a fire in the neighboring building nearly destroyed the work, he decided release a three hour "First Draft" cut of the film he had been assembling as "Walden". Beginning in 1950, Mekas would carry around a small Bolex camera, capturing what he saw, commenting on his website "On some days I shot ten frames, on others ten seconds, still on others ten minutes. The contents with the previous owner's name neatly to the edge of the front pastedown are otherwise clean and bright throughout. An excellent example of the multi-talented musician, author and artist's second book following 'In His Own Write'. Scarce and highly desirable in signed state.
