Description:
Signed by the crew of Apollo 11, the first manned mission to the Moon: Neil Armstrong (commander), Buzz Aldrin (lunar module pilot), and Michael Collins (command module pilot).
This is one of the famous "insurance covers" signed by the Apollo 11 crew to provide some financial security for their families in case the otherwise practically uninsurable astronauts failed to return from their mission.
Michael Collins and the other crew members personally designed the mission emblem, which shows an eagle descending to the lunar surface while holding an olive branch of peace. The design initially showed the olive branch in the eagle's beak, but when officials worried that the eagle was too menacing, the astronauts moved the branch to its extended talons.
Provenance: Neil Armstrong.8-cent Apollo 8 "In the Beginning God …" postage stamp, uncanceled. Mission emblem cachet. Fine condition. Encapsulated by CAG, which authenticated the Armstrong Family Collection.

Description:
1890-1906. THE EARLIEST RECORD OF THE INTRODUCTION OF GOLF TO JAPAN A naval officer's commonplace book from the last years of the 19th century containing rare ephemera, notably two printed documents of 1897 relating to the Hakodate Golf Club. These both predate the accepted date for the foundation of the "first golf club in Japan", at Kobe in 1901. Hakodate, on the northern island of Hokkaido, was the first Japanese port opened to foreign trade following the signing of the Convention of Kanagawa in 1854, and became a significant harbour on the China Station.Received wisdom has it that the history of golf in Japan "can be traced to Ryoichiro Arai, a Japanese businessman in the silk trade, who travelled to the United States and first played golf in 1900 at the Northfield Links, which later became the Atlantic City Golf Club. During his travels back and forth to Japan, he brought word of the game to his native country, especially after he was given his own set of golf clubs in 1902 by Andrew Carnegie,… Read More

England. Fair. 1685. On offer is an original, fascinating though flawed historically significant ancient 1685 manuscript. The 44 page document begins: "Our Will And Pleasure Is That You Prepare A Bill For Our Royall Signature To Pass Our Great Seale Of England in the words or to the effect following, James the Second and to all to whom these presents shall come Greetings. Description:
This archive contains 46 manuscript and partially-printed receipts, invoices, ship registrations, letters, and similar items. It begins with a 1794 letter from an agent in London to the family patriarch, Samuel Watkinson Sr., concerning the purchase of property in the United States and continues with several items related to the family's subsequent immigration in 1795. The remainder of the archive documents the Watkinsons' business activities that were key to developing the textile industry in and around Middletown, Connecticut. All are in nice shape. The letters are franked with a variety of British and U.S. rate stamps and postmarks including many scarce New York City "clamshell" handstamps. Samuel Watkinson, Sr., and his Scottish wife, Sarah, settled in Lavenham, Suffolk, England where they began to raise a family of 12. Samuel Sr. became a successful woolcomber and joined a Dissenting Society composed of tradesmen, craftsmen, and merchants that was often at odds with the Anglican Church. As… Read More

Description:
[Paris: Privately published by the artist, 1957]. A single perforated postage stamp painted with Klein's famous IKB (International Klein Blue) pigment. The stamps were originally created to use on invitations for his simultaneous 1957 exhibitions in Paris at the Gallerie Iris Clert and Gallerie Colette Allendy. This unsent stamp retains its original blue luster. Mail Art scholar John Held, Jr. writes: "With the mailing of his blue stamp, Klein not only created one of the first artist postage stamps, but also involved it in a postal action, prefiguring not only the widespread genre of artistamps in the following decades, but the conceptual philatelic actions of the Fluxus group in the sixties..." Fine example of this small, but iconic item. Provenance: the archive of famous Swedish graphic designer John Melin, probably best known for the innovative visual style he brought to the Moderna Museet during the '60s and '70s with his designs for catalogs, posters, and exhibitions.

Description:
NAUBUC, CONNECTICUT. Good. 1860. On offer is a super, unique and original 19th Century philatelic relic illustrating the growth of the U.S. postal system being an early U.S.A. postmark collection. This antique, novel book of 70+ pages of postmarks of varying density and ranging from the early 1860s through 1880s over approximately 96 hand numbered pages shows an ownership stamp on the fep stating 'F.R. Curtis, Naubuc, Ct.' The rare collection even includes some precious Confederate marks and many State capitals. As one would expect given the size of some States the relative quantity of marks in the album demonstrate the growth and extent of the US Postal system. For example New York contains 6 pages of postmarks whereas there are only 10 examples for Texas and 2 from the "Montana Territories". The 10 x 8 inch book has marbled boards with wear and peeling, text-block splitting (held by binding string), some leaves loose but otherwise G. ; Manuscript; 4to - over… Read More

Description:
Autograph Letter Signed. 2pp. To Davis, Deupree Co., Richmond, Virginia. Some light creasing in the middle of the document, stain near signature, normal aging; overall very good. Kind of scarce slave dealer letter, with a chilling business-as-usual tone, offering to be the slave auctioneers' scout and agent, Taylor had just received a letter from the Richmond firm, "revoking all letters of credit heretofore given me to draw on your firm for the purchase of negroes". Robert H. Davis and William S. Deupree opened their "Negro Bazaar" auction rooms in Richmond's Odd Fellows Hall in 1859 and briefly thrived until bankrupted early in the Civil War. Deupree then became an officer of the Confederate Torpedo Bureau and died in 1864 in a land-mine explosion. The short-lived firm is remembered by philatelic collectors because their advertising envelopes are among the few to survive with the motto, "[We] Sell Slaves".He objected that he had already "made arrangements to move to Lewisburg [200 miles each of… Read More

London: Philatelic Society. 1890. 200 copies only (not stated). Small 4to. viii, 136pp, 9 plates printed rectos only (loosely inserted), Lt.-Governor Arthur's 1827 newspaper duty stamp illustrated in text (p15). Unlettered green cloth, extremities rubbed, a few slight marks. A little offsetting on the endpapers, a good+ clean copy (but see below). ***This copy bound in unlettered green cloth, patterned endpapers, edges sprinkled red, with the plates loosely inserted, and is without the folding map of Tasmania. Ferguson 10648 does not mention a map, and calls for only 8 plates (the latter clearly an error). The publisher's binding was blind-stamped brown cloth, lettered on the spine, with yellow endpapers; the plates follow the text and map is at the title-page, all hinge-mounted with linen (the two copies in the State Library of Tasmania, and the Royal Society of Tasmania's copy are thus). The map is a standard Tasmanian government issue (drawn by Leventhorpe Hall, 1884) and in his… Read More

London: D. Field, 1927. I am printing stamps for the Sherif of Mecca" - the philatelic T. E. Lawrence First and only edition, sole printing, one of 350 copies, of this comprehensive work of Arabian philately covering issues from the kingship of Sherif Hussein, with designs devised by T. E. Lawrence, to the era of Ibn Saud, including the stamps made when he took control of Mecca. Extremely uncommon, just 10 locations on WorldCat.The present work opens with notes on the history of stamps after 1916 and Hussein's decision to destroy all former Turkish stamps and introduce new designs for political purposes. In the early years of Hussein's rule, the Arab Bureau and T. E. Lawrence had a significant hand in designing the kingdom's new stamp issues. Lawrence conducted initial research on designs, while Ronald Storrs "wandered … round the museum in Cairo collecting suitable motifs in order that the design in wording, spirit and ornament, might be as far as possible representative and reminiscent of a… Read More
